thats so much effort... how do you even decide what needs light? like do you have a mental image of what you want to achieve, or do you just start adding lights until you feel it's done?

For the most part I go by vibes. If you can find a good ref image, great, but otherwise I tend to think 'where is the light coming from and what would it bounce off of to create reflections/ambience' until it feels finished

These are so helpful! I also think it would be helpful to mention what kind of lights are mostly useful for this kind of technique (point, spot, or flat etc etc). How close/far they have to be, how strong, etc etc. the rough basics. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone do that yet.

I'm like 'Hmmm 6 lights is probably overkill and will probably look bad'. Anytime I see a sick gpose its like 30 lights, I need to get better at that

Oooh I would love to see the settings sometime if your willing to share - I have a few presets myself but have a super hard time getting characters that look that real.

Do you prefer to work with more lights, but little ones than fewer lights but bigger? I'm trying to improve the lighting in my gposes as i feel that, even if i'm happy with them, i can always make them look better, but i need more studying on how to use the different lights

I find that using big/very bright lights tends to cause light bleed or it reaching too far to areas I don't want lit. So I tend to use lower range + less intense lights with a smoother falloff angle so I can more accurately control where/what I'm lighting
