Ever Wonder Why John Cougar’s Name Kept Changing? Here’s Why. If you bought John Mellencamp's records over the years, you may remember watching something strange happen to his name. First he was Johnny Cougar. Then John Cougar. Then John Cougar Mellencamp. And finally, simply John Mellencamp. It looked like an artist repeatedly reinventing himself. But that's not what was happening. When Mellencamp was a young musician trying to break into the record business, manager Tony DeFries decided “Mellencamp” would be too difficult to market and renamed him Johnny Cougar. Mellencamp didn't like it. In fact, he later said he didn't even know the name had been changed until he saw it on his first album. But as an unknown artist, he didn't have much leverage to fight it. Eventually “Johnny” disappeared and he became John Cougar. Then came American Fool in 1982—and enormous success with songs like “Hurts So Good” and “Jack & Diane.” Now he had some leverage. On his next album, Uh-Huh, his real surname returned: John Cougar Mellencamp. He kept that name through the 1980s before finally dropping “Cougar” altogether in 1991. After roughly 15 years, the name on the album was simply: John Mellencamp. So all those years, John Mellencamp wasn't really changing his name. He was changing it back. And there's a good reason to tell that story today. John Mellencamp turns 75 today. Happy birthday to the man who finally got his own name back. 🎂
