That’s the best explanation I’ve read for the drug crisis in Scotland and it courier routes, by a journalist. Sadly it takes an external journalist to tell the full story rather than a home grown reporter to do the proper research and then the reporting of it. Well done Ika.👍

Great explanation! Spot on, including the cutting of rehab beds for drugs & alcohol in 2006/7 & again in 2015. The original SNP policy in 2007 (I think) was a good one. It didn't rely solely on methadone. If you listen to addicts on the programme, now it's anything but helpful.

This report by Sky News Africa correspondent Yousra Elbagir is heartbreaking yet typical for both poor Zimbabweans and their counterparts in South Africa, who are pitted against each other by South African politicians who use the immigration crisis to explain the stagnant South African economy and lack of jobs for poor and uneducated South Africans. My unsolicited advice to the South African Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber is that he is dealing with a political problem, not a technical one. My advice to ordinary South Africans is that mass deportations are a waste of time and your taxpayers money. Those deported today will return tomorrow, thanks to your border officials who demand bribes, it is a revolving door, and the porous border. I can get a bus full of people without passports to come into South Africa through the border not the river or back to Zimbabwe through the border again, thanks to the corruption on the South African side at the BeitBridge border post. This issue will not go away unless and until the ANC realises that it will lose power in 2029 and local government votes in 2026 for supporting ZANUPF’s corrupt rule. As I said, the real problem lies in the political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe, which the ANC has nurtured for decades at the expense of its own survival and its own people. The ANC risks losing power if it continues to babysit ZANUPF, this will happen in 2029 if nothing changes and the economy continued to stagnate. You do not hear of a Zambian illegal immigrant problem in South Africa because there is no political crisis in Zambia. Poorer countries than Zimbabwe, like Malawi, Botswana, and Namibia, have never caused an illegal immigrant crisis in South Africa because they also don’t have a political crisis which manifests through thrift economies. The last time you saw an opposition South African politician at the Limpopo River addressing this issue was during election season, when Gayton McKenzie and his gang were shouting and chanting “Abahambe,” at Limpopo River. They got the votes and have never been back since—that is politicians for you. You will see them again before the 2026 local government elections, using the same gimmick, “Abahambe.” Voters enjoy being played and being made to feel good through empty promises and lies. Gayton is now in government and cabinet, the right place to bring up the Zimbabwe political crisis because it is the root cause of illegal immigration. Has he done that? So, there are three things to take away from this ongoing immigration crisis; 1. that mass deportations will never work, as they are simply another avenue for bribes; this is not a technical problem but a political one. 2. Zimbabweans must also understand that the immigration debate in South Africa is based on real concerns from ordinary South Africans, as big businesses prefer illegal Zimbabwean labour to locals because they are underpaid and not unionised as illegal immigrants. So don’t insult uneducated South Africans saying they don’t want the waiting and cleaning jobs, they do, but they can’t take them at such low wages caused by cheap labour provided by illegal immigrants. I am in South African for a week attending to business meetings, today I took a drive to Pretoria to talk to Zimbabweans who are affected by the crisis back home and are seeking leave to live in South Africa after watching the Sky News report. I saw Zimbabwean criminals working in cahoots with local criminals taking money from unsuspecting Zimbabwean immigrants who want to regularise their paperwork. This is not even corruption, they were taking money from these poor Zimbabwean people lying that they can expedite their applications and then disappearing. I saw it with my own eyes, I don’t understand how a Zimbabwean can come to South Africa and steal from another Zimbabwean who is also struggling. But they do it, and the women selling mealies outside the Home Affairs offices in Pretoria told me that they do it daily, where is the police? These criminals lie to these people that they are agents and they can take their papers inside, they even call someone pretending that you are speaking to a South African Home Affairs officials. If the South African police go there tomorrow, they will be there! But as I said, all these are symptoms of a bigger and real problem, the political crisis in Zimbabwe, unless if it is resolved, South Africans who are not yet born will still be faced with the same crisis of illegal immigration decades to come! We always say we are the only country in the whole world that ever discovered a lot of oil and got poorer. But Scotland has more oil, always did have more oil than Norway. And yet the people of Norway are massively rich and Norway has a Sovereign Wealth Fund in the trillions of dollars. Whereas the people in Scotland, the ordinary people in Scotland, are amongst the poorest people in Europe. We produce far more energy than we consume in Scotland. It's all exported to England. We get nothing for it. [Randy] What? And yet we pay literally the highest retail energy prices in the whole world. Professor Alf, give us a more, a more developed, if you like. [Prof Alf Baird] So we are, as you say, the poorest country in north-west Europe. Yet at the same time we have enormous resources. We have enormous resources of oil and gas, renewable energy, agricultural, fisheries and so on. Aggregates, the biggest quarries in Europe. So we have enormous resources and wonderful tourist product as well. The most significant tourist destination in the UK after London. So Scotland has enormous resources. So we have to then try and understand why we have a colonial balance sheet. So there's an enormous leakage of wealth and resources, and particularly over the last 40 - 50 years. So the situation is pretty dire. And I've estimated that the loss of wealth, the loss of GDP is at least 100 billion pounds a year to Scotland. "It's not a partner in a marriage, but a kidnap victim. And you do not escape from a kidnapper by filing for divorce from a fictional marriage. "Second, even if it were possible to break free through a referendum or an election, or to propose any other route that would be approved as lawful by the kidnapping state, the political system in Scotland would not guarantee any of the things that sing in our bones as Scots. We dream of justice, compassion, equality, prosperity and care for all without preference or privilege. "But what we have is an english system of concentrated power and privilege, which those Scots who enjoy it will not give up easily. Where the government sits in authority over the people, and the people surrender their hopes, their ambitions and their human and civil rights to the whims of their elected representatives. Where all that we hold dear, all that we depend on for decency, fairness and security, depends on the honor, honesty and good faith of those elected. "Because once it is elected, we have no means of curbing, challenging or preventing anything a government may choose to do, whether or not that's lawful, just, rational or humane. "They mean that we, the people, are sovereign, in fact, not in sound bite, the ultimate authority of this nation of Scotland. "They mean that the interests of the people, collectively known as the common good, are not only the primary purpose of government, but the only condition on which it's permitted to exist. "They mean that we are entitled to overrule, remove or replace a government that violates that condition of its existence, that fails to honour its promises, to consult the people or to act according to their wishes and welfare. "And in the modern world, that means the right to all the mechanisms that we see in a nation like Switzerland, which will make that sovereign power a reality. "All this is part of what we call decolonization, true Scottish self determination. And it is the soul and purpose of liberation Scotland. "Impossible? Other nations have trodden the path to decolonisation. Not one has bowed to the kidnapper and asked for permission. "We know now that we can gain our independence as a state by first gaining independence from a colonizing power. So that instead of waiting to reclaim real sovereignty of the people after independence, we gain our independence by first reclaiming our sovereign Scottish rights. "The next step on this road is establishing the committee of the Scottish Liberation Movement. This committee will be elected from the membership of Liberation and will operate under a ratified constitution. "And it will register Scotland's Liberation Movement with the United Nations."
