The Gaineses gained fame through their HGTV series Fixer Upper (2013–2018), with Chip overseeing construction and Joanna doing the interior design. They built Magnolia, a successful brand that includes a market, bakery, restaurant, real estate company, and home decor lines, and launched the Magnolia Network in 2021.

Occasionally open about their Christian faith, the couple discussed its influence on their lives during a 2021 appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul Sunday, revealing all the ways that God speaks to them.

Their latest project, Back to the Frontier, which they executive produced in partnership with HBO Max, places three families in 1881 pioneer conditions—without electricity, modern amenities, or toilet paper—for eight weeks to gain perspective on their ancestors’ lives and appreciation for what they have now.

“I'm not a crier, but I felt it,” Joanna told USA Today. “I felt this sense of peace; I felt home. The idea that these three families got out of their busy rut and got to have this experience of eight weeks together going through the hard, going through the beautiful, it was like this spiritual experience that I felt for these families.”

Unlike Fixer Upper, which notaby faced criticism for not including LGBTQ couples, Back to the Frontier intentionally features a gay married couple with two children, reflecting a purposeful choice by the Gaineses to highlight them as a legitimate family and the supposed love and affection they have for each other.

So at first it was "all we want is to marry the one we love..." then it was "oh and we need a cake or else..." now it is "build us a huge house on a supposedly Christian tv show or else..."

Putting money over God's decrees. If they really had faith, they would trust God for the success of their show, not worldly pressures.
