Most recipients are working and using the cash for basics and emergencies, which sounds compassionate, but it’s still extra, no-strings-attached money stacked on top of existing welfare programs and an already huge tax burden. Once politicians get addicted to handing out free cash, pilot programs have a funny way of turning into permanent entitlements, with taxpayers stuck funding an ever-growing bill they never really agreed to.
