Construction of the 3.2-kilometre Magufuli Bridge on Lake Victoria was initiated by the former president in December 2019. President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who came into office in March 2021, is expected to officially inaugurate the mammoth project before the end of the year. The project was initially scheduled for completion in July 2023, but construction was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally known as the Kigongo-Busisi Bridge, the Chinese-built mega infrastructure was renamed Magufuli Bridge in honour of the former president. The project is being developed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Group (CCECG) and China Railway. The bridge was entirely financed by the government of Tanzania through its own revenues. The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), said construction of the bridge was completed on October 6. "As the last tank of cement was poured on Sunday, the construction of the Magufuli Bridge was completed by two Chinese companies in Tanzania's northwestern Mwanza region," the People's Daily said in an online post. "The Magufuli Bridge is the only extra-dosed cable-stayed bridge in the Lake Victoria region and the longest of its kind in Africa." One billionaire family controls the bridge that carries 25% of all U.S.–Canada trade. The good news? There's a brand new public bridge right next door (and Canada paid for the whole thing). The bad news? Donald Trump won't let it open. Here's the story: For more than a decade, Michigan and Canada worked together to build a new public crossing right next to it — six lanes over the Detroit River, named for a Canadian-born Red Wings legend, built by thousands of union workers. Canada paid the entire bill. Michigan co-owns it. It's finished. It’s a shining example of international cooperation and collaboration, with a tremendous return for both sides: more jobs, faster trade, and lower costs. So why isn't it open? Because the Moroun family, who own the rival Ambassador Bridge just up the river, doesn’t want the competition. They spent years and tens of millions of dollars trying to stop any competing international crossing from being built or opening. They lost. So they went to the White House instead. In January, Matthew Moroun gave $1 million to a pro-Trump super PAC. Then the billionaire called Trump's Commerce Secretary and, just hours later, Trump suddenly attacked the same publicly owned bridge he praised in his own first term and threatened to block it. Then, the day before the June 12th ribbon-cutting, the opening was called off indefinitely. It's corruption so flagrant it would be laughable if it weren't so damaging. Trump is screwing over Michiganders for the interests of billionaires — holding a finished, publicly owned project hostage to protect one donor's toll booth. So a finished bridge sits closed, Michiganders keep paying the higher tolls, cars and trucks cost more, and a billionaire family keeps its monopoly. Mr. President: stop playing games. Open the damn bridge.

One of the oldest cities in Spain is split in two by a 120 meter gorge. In the 18th century, a bridge was built across it. Hidden inside that bridge is a prison cell whose window opens onto the drop... The city is called Ronda, in the mountains of Andalusia, and it has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times. The Romans called it Arunda. The Moors held it for seven centuries. In 1966, the Spanish state declared its historic centre a national heritage site. The gorge that cuts it in two is called El Tajo. On one side stands the old Moorish quarter, La Ciudad, with roots in the 8th century. On the other stands the newer town, El Mercadillo, built outside the medieval walls when Ronda outgrew them. For most of the city's history, the only way between them was a long descent to the river below, and a long climb back up. In 1735, King Philip V of Spain ordered a bridge to span the chasm. The first attempt collapsed in 1741, killing about fifty people. A second project began in 1759 under the Spanish architect José Martín de Aldehuela. It took thirty-four years. The bridge was finally inaugurated in 1793. It is 98 meters tall, made of solid stone, and it has never moved. Above the central arch, the architects built a chamber of about sixty square metres. For most of the bridge's history, this chamber served as a prison. The prisoners could see the river through a small barred window in the floor of their world. Russia has built more than 2,500 km of roads and railroads, a new railway network, and revamped ports in the occupied territories of Ukraine, according to a Reuters investigation. Large-scale works, confirmed by satellite imagery and news agency data, indicate that this is not temporary wartime logistics, but a systematic integration of occupied territories into Russian infrastructure. One of the key projects is the "Novorossiya Railways" system, which includes a planned 525-km line started in 2023. Since that year, Russia has spent about $425 million on the construction and maintenance of the railway network in the occupied territories. At the same time, road infrastructure is also being developed: the "Novorossiya" highway is being built as part of the 1,400-kilometer "Azov Ring" loop, which is intended to connect the seized parts of Ukrainian regions with Russia and Russian-occupied Crimea. According to Reuters, the new rail and road connections already allow Moscow to circumvent the Crimean Bridge, which had previously been the main road and rail link to the peninsula and remains vulnerable to Ukrainian strikes. Occupied Ukrainian ports that were largely inactive in the first years of the war have been revamped and reopened under Russia's flag on the inland Sea of Azov. Satellite images taken of Mariupol's docks in August 2025 show a new silver-domed facility, and nearby, a mountain of what looks like coal being readied for export. The long-term nature of the infrastructure projects, as well as the scale of investment ($11.8 billion was allocated to develop four occupied Ukrainian regions between 2024 and 2026), shows the Kremlin has no intention of returning the territories to Ukraine as part of any future peace settlement, experts say.

🚨🇺🇸🇮🇷The talks failed. Here's what actually happens next... Twenty-one hours of historic negotiations ended with Vance walking out and Iran blaming "American greed." But the details matter more than the headline. What actually broke down: Two issues. Iran won't give up Hormuz control or commit to ending enrichment. The U.S. won't unfreeze assets or accept Iranian tolls on international waters. After 21 hours, neither side moved enough on either. What didn't break down: The ceasefire is still in effect. Iran says "negotiations will continue despite remaining differences" and technical experts will exchange documents. Vance left a "final and best offer" on the table. Nobody burned the bridge. They just couldn't cross it today. Pakistan is understandably devastated. The delegation reportedly poured enormous political and diplomatic capital into making this happen. Islamabad locked down a city of two million people, deployed thousands of troops, flew fighter escorts for the Iranian delegation, and put its international credibility on the line. Now it's caught between its defense pact with Saudi Arabia and its role as Iran's mediator, with nothing to show for it yet. The realistic scenarios: Iran quietly accepts the "final offer" within days. The mood swings during talks suggest they were close on some issues. Sometimes walking out is what forces the other side to move. If Iran's economic desperation is as severe as sources inside the talks suggested, the financial pressure may override the political resistance. Pakistan or another mediator brokers a resumption. The clock runs out with no agreement and Trump faces the same decision he faced on April 8th. My read: This isn't the end. USAAF 14th PRS Spitfire PR Mk XI gunned down at point blank range likely by a Luftwaffe Me 262 jet fighter in 1944 The incident pictured most likely involved Spitfire PR Mk XI PL782 flown by 2nd Lt Robert B Hilborn. The aircraft was intercepted over Lechfeld by Leutnant Alfred Schreiber of Erprobungskommando 262 in Me262 A-1a WerkNr. 110372 "White 3". This latter unit was the first to deploy the Messerschmitt jet and would later form Kommando Nowotny. Hilborn managed to bail out of his stricken aircraft and was taken prisoner. The USAAF insignia on the top of the port wing is clearly visible as the aircraft banks away and both the severe vibration on firing and size of the cannon shell impacts suggest 30mm gunfire consistent with the Me 262's MK 108 battery in the nose, and the jet aircraft would also have been able to comfortably keep up with the fast unarmed photoreconnaissance Spitfire variant at altitude. The 3cm Minengeschoss high-capacity shells were formidable projectiles each containing over 70 grams of high explosive and were designed to detonate within six or so inches of having penetrated the aircraft skin, destroying the aircraft structure in the process and rendering the aircraft unflyable after only a few hits. The amount of debris flying off the Spitfire after only three visible detonations is testament to the devastating effect of such fire. The US 14th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron began to train with British-made Supermarine Spitfire Mk V fighters in July 1943 before equipping with the photographic reconnaissance PR Mk XI variant later that year. The squadron flew combat reconnaissance missions in the European Theater of Operations from August 12th 1943 until April 25th 1945. The squadron's Spitfires flew the majority of the target photography missions, including the first Spitfire reconnaissance mission over Berlin in March 1944, while the other squadrons of the 7th Photographic Group (Reconnaissance) equipped with F-5 Lightnings concentrated on photographic mapping. Deep penetration missions included reconnaissance of oil refineries to determine when repairs had been performed that could justify returning them to Eighth Air Force's target list. The Squadron earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for reconnaissance missions flown over France between May 31st 1944 and the end of June. The squadron flew over 300 successful sorties to support Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy. It flew missions over the Netherlands to support Operation Market Garden in October 1944 and conducted damage assessment of Germany until July 23rd 1945. In late 1944, the Spitfires, flying solo missions and relying only on speed and altitude for defense, began to prove vulnerable to the jet powered Messerschmitt Me 262 fighters entering service with the Luftwaffe. A squadron aircraft lost on September 5th 1944 was probably the first Army Air Forces loss to a German jet fighter. Erprobungskommando 262 had been formed in April 1944 at Lechfeld just south of Augsburg, as a test unit (Jäger Erprobungskommando Thierfelder, commanded by Hauptmann Werner Thierfelder) to introduce the Me 262 into service and train a corps of pilots to fly it. This was not Leutnant Schreiber's first go at an Allied reconnaissance plane, while flying over Munich on July 26th he encountered a Mosquito PR Mark XVI of No. 540 Squadron RAF piloted by Fl. Lt. A.E. Wall. Schreiber attempted to shoot down the unarmed Mosquito, though Wall evaded Schreiber's three attack runs and was able land safely at Fermo in Italy after what was the first air to air interception by a jet fighter in history.

Facial reconstruction of a 1,400-year-old man from Hilmes, Germany The skull of this medieval man is often incorrectly identified online as belonging to a hunter-gatherer. At Hilmes, the skeletal remains of a large number of men, women, and children were excavated. The number of children is striking (at least 12 so far, most of them Infans I), though they were probably only partially reconstructed and not fully processed. Two juvenile males were also excluded from the statistical count. Five adult males and five adult females could be reliably reconstructed and analyzed. The average cranial length of the five Hilmes males is 185.6 mm, ranging from 173 to 194 mm. The average cranial breadth is 142.4 mm, ranging from 136 to 147 mm. The cranial index is 76.4, with a range of 73–79.8, indicating medium-long to long skulls. The average basion-bregma height is 136.6 mm; in four skulls it consistently falls between 137 and 139 mm, with only skull 4 (H4), at 131 mm, lying outside this range. The average length-height index is 74.4, ranging from 71 to 75.7. The average length-ear-height index is 60.8, ranging from 60 to 62.2. H7 (the reconstructed individual) displays a facial morphology described as strongly Cro-Magnon-like. H7 in particular has extremely broad zygomatic arches, reaching 146 mm, approaching the dimensions of Oberkassel's 155 mm. The zygomatics are characteristically Cro-Magnon in form, with pronounced anterolateral projection and rounded margins. The nose is of medium height and breadth, with only a moderately elevated nasal bridge. The mandible is robust and closely resembles the Cro-Magnon mandibles described by Altendorf, with strong dentition and broad jaw dimensions. H7 and H7a both possess a characteristic Cro-Magnon brow ridge, forming a straight line above the eye sockets and nasal root. Their frontal facial appearance is marked by broad, low orbits, a square facial shape, and strong horizontal facial features. Professor Fischer referred to H7 and H7a as the “two brothers” due to similarities in the occipital shape and the nearly identical development of the brow ridges, despite differences in cranial proportions. H7a also shows a deeply indented supraorbital ridge and recessed nasal root, though its facial skeleton is somewhat more gracile. The zygomatic arches remain broad and typically Cro-Magnon in position, while the mandible is more delicate and narrower than H7’s. The greatest differences between the two lie in the nasal and midfacial structure. H7a exhibits a strongly projecting midface and alveolar region, with marked prognathism. The nasal bones project prominently forward despite their shortness, and the nasal floor transitions directly into the prognathic alveolar process with only a weak nasal spine. It should merely be noted here that the severe prognathism of 74°, primarily alveolar prognathism, may have been intensified by the early loss of the molars and premolars and by severe fistula formation. The incisors and canines, despite the loss of the remaining teeth, exhibit only slight wear. The condition appears very similar to the findings of the SSA-like woman from Menton (the Grimaldi race) illustrated by Verneau (70). (Gustav Perret, 1937)

Facial reconstruction of a 2,000-year-old individual from the Saka-Wusun period at Ala-Myshyk, Tian Shan, Kyrgyzstan The union of the Wusun tribes, which became especially powerful in the 3rd-1st centuries BC, had the ruler’s (Gunmo) headquarters in the city of Chigu, on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul. The weakening of the Wusun confederation began in the 1st century AD, when it suffered a strong blow from the Xiongnu, but it was fully destroyed in the 4th-5th centuries AD by the Rourans, who are thought to have come from Mongolia. The first cranial data on the Wusun of the Tian Shan were studied by T. A. Trofimova (1936, 1949), based on seven skulls dated to the 1st century BC-1st century AD, excavated near Karakol at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul. G. F. Debets later expanded the sample with finds from S. A. Teploukhov and, in 1948, confirmed its classification within the Central Asian interfluve type. These skulls lie at the lower boundary of brachycrania (CI: males 81.3, females 83.4), with medium-high vaults, relatively broad faces, orthognathous but moderately profiled features, and moderately projecting noses. Only two show lower cranial indices, one with a narrow face. Overall, the series is predominantly Europoid with slight Mongolid admixture. The cranial vault dimensions of the Wusun are of medium size, which corresponds to a cranial index of 81, placing them at the lower boundary of brachycrania. The facial part of the skull is low (males - 71 mm, females — 68 mm), but fairly broad (males - 137 mm, females - 126 mm). The horizontal facial profile is moderate (zygomaxillary angle - 131°). Nasal projection is medium or above average (males - 28°, females - 22°), while the height of the nasal bridge tends toward higher values. Overall, the Wusun of the Tian Shan occupy an intermediate position between the major races. They belong to the Europoid race, but show a clear, though slight, Mongolid admixture, expressed in a certain facial flatness. These Mongolid traits appear superimposed upon an essentially Europoid cranial base. Some skulls show little to no Mongolid influence, while others display it more strongly. More detailed analysis shows this type to be intermediate between the Andronovo type and the Central Asian interfluve type, with varying degrees of transition between them. At the same time, the Wusun of the Tian Shan and Alay also show admixture from another Europoid type - dolichocranial, narrow-faced, Mediterranean. In the Tian Shan, this component appears scattered among the population, whereas in the Alay Valley it is concentrated in specific burial grounds, suggesting kin-based groupings and differing ethnic connections among tribes. Some tribes were clearly in contact with populations of the Pamir Plateau, which during the Saka-Wusun period belonged to a distinctly Mediterranean Europoid type, as noted earlier. Next, Head to Burial Grounds left-side door and interact with the keyhole. 5. Interact with the door again and hold it to open the door and to unlock the underground area. 6. This will spawn a Zursa Bear during a special round (starting the second special round) you need to kill him and he will drop The Lantern 7. Place The Lantern in the center of the Underground Room in Burial Grounds. 8. Constellations will appear around the wall. Interact with them as they’re shown on the table in this order: left, right, back, front. 9. Once completed, Astrid will appear and talk, she will then travel to different areas of the map. She will occasionally stop and you will need to kill frost zombies next to her. 10. Once all the Soulboxes are completed an Obstacle Course will form on the outside of The Lighthouse, climb to the top by Jumping / Wall Jumping up 11. Once you reach the top, Listen to the Astrid talk and pick up The Jotunn Star Wundersignal: 1. After completing Jotun Star Quest Head to The Lighthouse and inside on a shelf there will be a Crowbar 2. There are Multiple Wooden Boxes around the map with red IDs on the bottom right corner of the front of the box in red (for example III-6) use The Crowbar on the Wooden Box that has the Roboterteile ID (the IDs are on the shipping manifest in the War Factory Admin Room), this will give Flak Gun Round War Factory Core Foundry Fjord Road Dry Dock 3. Head to Turret Gun beside The Lighthouse and place Flak Gun Round then melee with Jotunn Star 4. Next, Head to The Robot Head in spawn and interact with it to search broken piece to get The Transmitter 5. Go to Tyr’s Head and place it inside the Wall Machine thingy at the top of the Ladder 6. Next, whilst inside of Tyr’s Head underneath the balcony there are 3 white lights, 2 of these lights will blink, count how many times it blinks -Both lights will remain on, There is the sound of a light turning on to indicate the start of a new light flashing cycle where both lights will flash at the same time to a certain count (for example left 2, right 5). Both lights will be on and then it will flash another set (for example left 6, right 4). (Unsure if these 2 combos have to be put into console in order but correct entry will give two different voicelines.) After entering one correctly you will be kicked out to hear voiceline and can re-enter console to input the 2nd shortly afterwards. 7. Now head to Core Foundry, and use a molotov to burn the ascender to access the consoles. 8. Ascend and interact with the consoles, The next part is timed and has a cooldown if you fail - you need to Calibrate the Amplitude and Frequency using the flashing light code. 9. Once this has been done head to the room Next to the Radio Tower and pick up The Wunderbarrage Controller Atomkraft Core 1. Find three uraniums: Uranium #1 Find the Fishing Rod (Olaf’s Personal Item) locations: - Dry Dock - Storm Bridge - Fishery Island - Beacon island Look for a Glowing Green Fish jumping around the water at each Fishing Location and use the Fishing Rod at that location once you see it Fishing Locations: Eidskallen Landing x2 Beacon Island x2 Eidskallen Square x2 Dry Dock (found one so far) Fishery Island x2 Tyr’s Foot (found one so far) Once the fish is caught it will spawn an Irradiated Ravager (HVT) that will disappear and respawn somewhere else, chase it down and kill it (check your map to see its location, it shows up as an HVT). It will drop a Uranium. Uranium #2 Next, Craft an ARC-XD (there is one for free in Eidskallen Square on top of a box near the flame trap, you can get it by fishing as well) and melee the vent at Core Foundry to the left of the zipline to open the Secret ARC-XD Course. Blow up the boat full of barrels. Once the course is completed the 935 Genetic Lab room will be open and another Uranium x2 will be inside a Prison Cell There are several Jars with Heads inside in this room, all labelled A,B,C,D,E Look down the Hallway inside the Lab and note which numbered rooms have Nuclear Symbols 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, 4 = D and 5 = E Take one Jar at a time that corresponds with the Numbers next to Nuclear Symbols and place them on the machine to the right of the cell door, once the correct jars are placed the Jar on the left side of the machine will glow purple and you can pick up acid There is a Big Chunk of Meat on a desk next to multiple drawings in the same Room, interact with it, then Pick up The Necrospike Once you have The Necrospike, use it on the Prison Cell Door, this will trigger a lockpick mini game. Spin the lockpick until the lock turns white 3x to unlock the cell, then pick up the second Uranium. Uranium #3 Next you need to craft or obtain the Glocke Drop, once you have one call it in, then shoot 20 mid-air zombies it throws up. This will drop the third and final Uranium. 2. At the Dry Dock, you need to call a WunderBarrage (unlocked by completing Wundersignal steps) in on the “02 Building” at Dry Dock (where there’s debris on the stairs), this will open the stairs to the Machine Workshop. 3. Inside The Workshop there is a Claw Machine which you can place all of The Uranium inside of and play a mini-game. -Have a big group of 7 cores and a small group of 2 cores. 4. Once you complete the Mini-game you will be able to pick up The Atomkraft Core (Note: you drop if you zipline, and cant sprint with it) 5. Head to Quick Revive and place The Atomkraft Core on generator next to quick revive. Go into the shed behind quick revive and turn on the generator. You must now defend the The Atomkraft Core until it’s charged. In interrupted you must turn on the generator again to continue. 6. Take the The Atomkraft Core to the barrel on the Storm Bridge and a Mini-Cutscene will play between the Giant and The Robot. Vegvisir 1. After the cutscene finishes, The Dravakar Shard will spawn at Tyr’s Foot, pick it up 2. Pick it up and place the Shard inside the Bloodheim Hall on the bonfire 3. Use WW range attack to light the fire 4. Use Disciple Injection (there should be a free one around the map) and throw zombies into the bonfire (I only had to throw four) 5. A lockdown will start. Kill the boss zombie and pick up the Sunstone from the bonfire 6. Put the Sunstone in the church and do a range WW attack on it. 7. Around the map, there will now be floating rocks and runes. Above the church there will now be a compass with runes and arrows. -Shoot the floating rune rocks with the ranged WW in the order of the arrow lines. If an arrow has 1 line, then that's the first one. If an arrow has 2 lines, that's the second one, etc. 8. Go into Tyr's Head and interact with the console to start the boss fight. Zarar Wazir, a resident of Paryat in Razmak, North Waziristan, had recently completed his Hifz when he was approached by associates of Commander Abu Bakar, also known as Mohsin, who tried to recruit him into their group. The young boy eventually showed interest and began visiting their temporary hideout in the Mossaki area. During this time, the commander and senior militants reportedly exploited him and recorded compromising material to use as leverage in case he tried to leave their activities. Meanwhile, his parents and relatives were desperately searching for their missing son. Some local shepherds informed them that the boy had been lured and taken by militants belonging to Abu Bakar’s group in the Mossaki (JangJal) forests. The family went there several times and pleaded for his release, but their requests were rejected. They were even told that their son would soon attain “72 hoors” and that the family would also be rewarded with paradise for his sacrifice. When pressure started building for the boy’s release, the militants reportedly handed him over to another group. According to the account, he was sold to the HGB operations head, Commander Talwar Waziristani, for Rs. 500,000. Talwar then placed the boy under the supervision of his local area commander, Irshad Himati. Irshad and his associates allegedly prepared a Mazda truck packed with explosive drums and acid reportedly supplied by an Afghan militant named Mubariz Afghani to carry out a high-impact suicide attack. Before the attack, the boy was shown the intended target: the Chashmai check post near Miranshah in North Waziristan, where security forces were stationed. Information about a possible suicide attack had already been circulated across Miranshah, and security forces were on high alert. However, authorities did not have details about the boy or the specific vehicle. On the day of the incident, the truck approached the Chashmai Bridge check post on the main Bannu–Miranshah road. Only two security personnel were present at the post, and they opened fire as the truck moved closer. In panic, the boy detonated the explosives before reaching the HESCO barriers. The blast killed two civilians and left 18 others critically injured, while no security personnel lost their lives due to the prior alert. Most of the casualties occurred among passengers traveling in a Hiace coach and other vehicles that were passing by at the time of the explosion. Among the injured and affected were six people from his own village, Paryat Dirdoni, while the rest were from other areas of North Waziristan. The A's continue to stack up on young left-handed pitching, selecting Mason Edwards (2nd round, pick 47). Edwards wields a 91-94 mph four-seam averaging ~21 iVB, although the pitch plays below its raw carry from a very high 6.6 ft. release height. Likely needs to be 93-95 for big league success, swing-and-miss somewhat lacked. The secondaries and their potential make Edwards the prospect he is. From the over-the-top release, his 80 mph curveball generates strong two-plane movement (-10/11) at a very steep approach. Strong command of the offering, ability to use at high frequency. While he didn't use it too often, Edwards' changeup has massive promise, also on a very steep plane from his heavily vertical release. Showed velocity and movement separation from his four-seam, projects as a great weapon vs. RHH. Boasted an elite whiff rate >50%. Needs more consistent feel and usage. The southpaw's slider is also a work in progress and was non-existent in many outings this year, but it will be a critical bridge pitch in his arsenal. 80-82 mph with inconsistent shape. With such a large vertical distinction between his four-seam and curveball, Edwards needs a hard, tight slider to sit between the pair and make swing decisions tougher. Hopefully, the A's can find a mid-80s pitch in gyro territory. The largest area for growth with Edwards is his command, as he posted a walk rate >10% in each of his three collegiate seasons (11.9% junior year). In my opinion, it seemed like he was always pitching for punchouts and around the edges of the plate. I think more strikes should come with more in-zone emphasis in early counts, and he has the stuff to never worry about being over the plate. With some velocity progression and refinement of his changeup and slider, I find it very likely Mason Edwards becomes at least of middle of the rotation starting pitcher. A's have a stellar crop of young southpaws.

By Roman Alekhin To discuss this further, the key point to understand is this: Two and a half hours behind closed doors is too little for leaders of nuclear powers if they are just starting a conversation—but too much if they were merely posing for cameras. This means the real work happened earlier—quiet, working discussions “behind the door” that never made it into the official communiqué. These are what stopped Trump from imposing secondary sanctions; this is where the exchange of conditions took place, terms that won’t be disclosed until both leaders decide the time is right. I suspect Syria was discussed, as well as the “Trump Bridge” (instead of Zangezur), the Middle East, and much more that isn’t yet visible to the naked eye. The public part? Pure theater. The point wasn’t to negotiate in front of the world or sign something, like Trump did with Armenia and Azerbaijan—minor players, important only tactically. The point was to send a signal: the presidents of Russia and the U.S. are shaking hands and smiling again, no knives behind their backs. This signals that a new reality has arrived, one that Europe, Ukraine, and everyone accustomed to building their worldview around the idea of “Russia’s isolation” will now have to reckon with—including those within our own countries. Trump’s comments on Fox News were deliberately vague—he’s a master at leaving room for maneuver. But the key takeaway is clear: the pressure will now shift from Moscow to Kyiv and Brussels. This is evident even in the final format—not a word about a “no-conditions” ceasefire, which was Europe and Zelensky’s main demand. This means the discussion on a final peace has been postponed, but within a clear framework: Zelensky must exit the war in a way that lets Europe save face. Russia’s red lines have long been clear: non-aligned status for Ukraine, return of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions within their administrative borders (not the frontlines), lifting of sanctions, and real democracy in Ukraine without persecution of the Russian language or the Orthodox Church. These conditions will prolong the conflict for some time. Zelensky will need to stage a fighting retreat to the administrative borders—this will allow Europe to save face. But the logic is already visible: Ukraine’s defeat will be framed not as a “crushing” but as a “peaceful settlement.” Six months—that’s the timeframe in which we’ll see the dynamics. If the front accelerates, the deal is working. If it stalls, not all pieces are in place yet. But the main thing is already done: Russia is back in the game, not through gray negotiating formats but through a handshake on American soil—even if it’s chilly Alaska. (Though we have warm ties to the region, as seen in the wreath-laying for the “Heroes of ALSIB” and the meeting with Archbishop Alexy of Sitka and Alaska.) For the world, this is an image where smiles are worth more than signatures. For Trump—a chance to show he’s the only one who can “make peace.” For Putin—a symbolic victory: Russia is not a besieged enemy but an equal player.
