Vitalik Buterin on Ethereum as the economic layer for AI “The blockchain to me is the most natural way to allow applications and cooperation between many different people in the long term without needing to agree on who to trust. The other thing is also the economic layer. This is the layer where blockchains can support AIs.” Vitalik believes Ethereum will play a large role in the future of decentralized AI: “If you have more decentralized AI, that means you have different AIs (agents, programs) that are controlled by different people and need to interact with each other. And for that interaction to be possible, you need to have an economic layer. Either cooperation is based on economic incentives and economic rules. Or it’s based on central control. No single tool has all the data a user or business needs for most workflows, so we need Agents to be able to talk to each other. Salesforce will have AI Agents that understand the inner workings of CRM, Workday will have AI Agents that understand HR workflows, Box has AI Agents that understand content and documents, and so on. It’s easy to conceive of a world where we have tens of thousands of these tool Agents and then billions or trillions of customized Agents that are extensions of those. So openness becomes key. Workflows need data from multiple systems to complete the task — like a sales report that needs documents and CRM data or an HR task that needs HR policies and employee details — and that’s where A2A comes in. This protocol gives AI Agent providers a way of talking to each other and simplifying the way that Agents communicate, understand each other’s capabilities, and so on. It’s great to see more interoperability, along with MCP, emerging in the AI space right now, as this will define the future of most IT stacks.

Aaron Levie has been the CEO of Box for 20 years and believes that systems of record become more important, not less, with agents: “Systems of record were built for a TAM of human employees. And that was sort of where the value maxed out at. And now maybe we'll have a hundred times more agents than people or a thousand times more agents than people. So I think on a relative basis, the agent layer will seize growth from zero to a trillion. But the system of record layer now has a thousand times more users on it that need to access data and need to execute a workflow and need to move things through various events. And importantly, you need as an enterprise to care about data integrity and security and the controls in your workflow and traffic copying the agents. So basically, this is where I am very diametrically opposed to the view that the system of record gets is squeezed into a database interaction layer because you actually need all of the core system of record properties for the agents to operate on.”

And so the question is: do they trust you? Your reputation matters. Your history matters.” He explains that a one of the key reasons Sequoia wrote the initial check into NVIDIA was because he had done great work with Andy Bechtolsheim, the founder of Sun. Jensen also argues that you need to have a vision that’s “sufficiently large to invest in.” Because of the nature of the businesses VCs invest in, the odds of success are rather low. “If they need to put in $10 million and the market is only $20 million, they’ll never get that $10 million back with a reasonable return.” But market size is secondary to people: “You might have to reinvent yourself over time, and if you want to reinvent yourself, you need to have great people.
