Palestinians have not simply been offered a sovereign, contiguous state on viable borders, with control of security, airspace and resources, and consistently rejected it. But it was gravely damaged in 1995 when Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a Jewish extremist opposed to the Oslo Accords and territorial compromise. There have been rejected offers, terrible violence and profound failures on both sides. But settlement expansion has also steadily fragmented the West Bank, making the state Palestinians are told to accept harder to create in practice.
