Andy Burnham proposes land value tax: "We Overtax People's Work"

As I’m from farming stock I can say this man is a cunt.

Clueless, they just thinks of new ways to tax, never cut spend or growth. The government needs to massively stop spending and cut waste.

They just introduced a wealth tax on houses, an inheritance tax on farms. Pure Marxist removal of all private ownership. Interesting

He notably doesn’t say he wants income taxed less, just that wealth is “under taxed.” Get ready for those tax rises!

Britain already has the highest rate of property tax in the world.

He doesn’t want to tax cash income. He wants to tax assets. That means if you are property/land/asset rich you will have to cough up cash you probably don’t have. In other words, forcing people to sell assets. They want to seize everyone’s land and assets. Communism.

Shifting taxes to land is not a partisan thing. Prominent UK conservatives support it. Why tax work and construction more than the unearned gain of land?

The man is economically illiterate. If two people earn the same money. 1) buys a new car every 3 years, lots of holidays, small house and garden. 2) buys 2nd hand, saves, invests in home and garden. Both pay the same income tax. This throbber wants to punish 2)

I'm the fourth generation of my family to live on a small farm in the Cotswolds - under ten acres now. I'm disabled (partially-sighted) but don't qualify for PIP because I'm too active for my own good (at least as far as the UK benefits system is concerned). I have a lodger (whom I undercharge because cost of living here is insane, giving him a chance to earn a living without exploitative rent). I have a diversified business including a music studio in a barn conversion (resisted the recommendations by well-off neighbours to make it into a money-raking AirBnB). My wife is an NHS nurse who is taxed punitively for her work. I am an unofficial carer for my elderly father, and until recently my late grandmother (multi-generational living - how passé!). I pay over £3000 a year in council tax alone, and that is just on one half of the property - my father pays the other half. Why, for the love of God, can people like Burnham not understand that a one size fits all tax like this will destroy livelihoods and families, particularly in high-value areas like ours. Maybe not my family and livelihood - I pray that we may muddle through somehow - but how many more people like me just slip through the cracks? We're not homeless, we're not starving, but we work bloody hard to make ends meet and are taxed so much for our efforts, more so than the ultra-rich - my income is honestly equivalent to a low wage retail worker or first job graduate. I've done everything I can to give back to wider society despite illness and limited means, why should yet another tax fall on my shoulders? Unless a future land value tax is also tied some way into household income, it will be devastating. If I sell up now, I pretty much guarantee some corporate fat cat will snap up this place and all of the community that I've had a small part in making - farming, music, culture, history - all of that will disappear overnight. I hardly ever write this much on X, but statements like this from our future PM make me more pessimistic about the future, not less - and I consider myself still fairly left-wing, certainly on social and some economic policy. Moron alert. Just because someone has a large property doesn't mean they have disposable cash. A lot of old people would be forced to sell and move. People who are expecting this guy to be better that Starmer are going to be in for a chock.

This typifies a politician from the public sector or someone who has had a career only in politics. Everything is take, nothing is created. They target the very people who pay for everything, who contribute the most and who pay for all public services including those who hate the thought of work. Who voted for Burnham or worse Labour? There must be more in the public sector and on welfare than there are working full time n the private sector.

Good to see this getting mainstream attention. There are few other policies like shifting taxes to land (off work) that would actually tackle the root economic challenge -- the incentives to extract wealth from land rents. @rorysutherland

How about removing inheritance tax? I bought my house from income post tax, repaid mortgage. Now if my daughter inherits my house after I die, she’ll have to pay huge tax on it. Why????
