Anger and hatred are very different. Anger is an evolved emotion with a specific function: it helps us bargain for better treatment. If you anger me, I may respond in ways that attempt to recalibrate how you treat me—by inflicting costs or withholding benefits. Anger is typically expressed through... verbal confrontation, hostility, or even by withdrawing, such as giving someone the silent treatment. In all of these cases, the goal of anger is to navigate the relationship and change the other person’s behavior. Hatred, however, is different. Hatred goes beyond bargaining. It is the belief that the target is so toxic, so costly to one’s well-being, that the world would be better if they no longer existed. Anger says, “I want you to treat me differently.” Hatred says, “You shouldn’t exist anymore.”show more

‘IS GOD IS’ director Aleshea Harris discusses the themes behind the film: “I know the rules for being a Black woman and a Black girl, which is that the dictates of respectability are that you have to conduct yourself in a certain way, you have to hold things down, and you shouldn't show your anger. And I think that that's dehumanizing, which is part of the reason that I allowed these women the full measure of their humanity. Allowed them to get messy, allowed them their rage, which for me was restorative and healing, to say, 'No, actually, you have reasons to be angry, and you can express that anger. I’m a huge Tom Brady fan… There are a few interesting comments here from him that are indicative of personal preference. “I had no friends on any other team” “Anger helped me. The more I could create an enemy” We have to be very careful when we listen to comments from players about their ideal competitive self. Case studies of one. What helps them may hinder others… You can have friends on other teams and be a brutal, ruthless competitor. That is possible. Perhaps a useful case study can be seen in tennis. Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Andy Murray. Seemingly , good friends…but on court a will to slice and dice the games’ of their mate. And then anger… Well, anger can surge energy that becomes useful for the execution of actions…technical, tactical, and (especially) physical actions. But anger can also distract. Players may focus on the experience of anger more so than the tasks at hand. Anger can create a degree of perceptual tunnel-vision that can cause players to miss cues. And anger can burn through energetic resources quickly, creating fatigue and lethargy all too quickly. Performance is never straight-forward…and the performance mindset is individual-specific…

Gabor Maté: The parts of you filled with hatred, addiction, and self-loathing all deserve compassion. They came along to protect you. Most of us treat our darkest inner states like enemies to be defeated. The shame, the compulsions, the voice that says you're not enough. We want to cut them out. Gabor Maté sees it differently. "The parts most filled with hatred, the parts that are addicted, the parts that are even full of self-loathing, they all deserve compassion. They all deserve to be held and understood. And they all came along for a reason." That reason, he explains, is survival. When a child isn't getting their needs met or worse, is being hurt, they face an impossible situation. They can make one of only two unconscious assumptions about their world. The first: this is a terrible world, I'm all alone, everybody is against me. The second: there is something wrong with me, and if I work hard enough, maybe I can fix it. Which one can a child actually live with? "To assume that the world is that dangerous is just unbearable for the child. It's also turning the anger towards the adults against yourself which is a lot safer. It's not very safe to be angry with your parents all the time when you're 2 years old." So the child chooses self-blame. It's the only assumption that gives them any sense of agency. If it's my fault, then maybe I can do something about it. That self-loathing voice was a coping mechanism. A piece of the psyche that stepped forward to make life bearable. The work, then, isn't to silence or destroy these parts. It's to finally see what they were trying to do and to offer them the understanding they never received.

Like when we see them, I can kind of see like how their anger is building one way or the other." Nyong'o: "This movie is a lot about the cost of war on everybody. Firstly, I believe that people should be allowed to express themselves. At the same time, in an environment increasingly filled with rhetoric, anger, and hatred, I feel it is better to create things creatively - things that are joyful and that promote peace, love, and the welfare of people. I am an admirer of the people of Kerala. I see how beautifully the communities in Wayanad live, how they celebrate festivals together and help each other during times of crisis. It doesn’t matter which religion you belong to or what caste you are from; everyone helps one another, and everyone comes forward. Even today, this spirit continues. I believe this is the true essence of India; it is the spirit of Kerala. That, I feel, is what makes it so beautiful. Why not showcase it? Why not talk about it?
