Matt Damon says Stanley Kubrick spent days lighting a miniature version of the Overlook Hotel just so he could recreate the exact same lighting on the real set of The Shining. “I worked with the production designer, who the last film he did was The Talented Mr. Ripley, and he was Kubrick’s guy.” “And he told me this great story about when he was designing that movie. Stanley Kubrick had a scale model of the Overlook Hotel in their production office, and they would stand around, and this is like 1978 or ’79, and he would set these lights on, you know, to shoot this little hotel.” “He would set miniature lights, and he would get them he would take hours doing this while his production heads were standing around. And then he’d take a photograph, and then he’d hand it to an assistant who would go and run off, and this is before one-hour photo, and develop it and come back with an 8-by-10.” “And Kubrick would look at it for about five minutes, and then he’d put it down and he’d go back and he’d start setting the lights.” “And this process would go on for days.” “But what Roy said was incredible was when you were on the set, Kubrick had come up with some algorithm by which he could kind of transpose the numbers of the lights.” “So he would set it just how he wanted, and then he would record what each light was at. She says that during the litigation, she’d go on tour and perform hit songs, but it was really difficult and lonely because of the anxiety and fear she was living with, saying it felt like she was being punished. “I got found when i was 17 and i signed the record deal at 18 years old. And this record deal signed away the rights to my voice and likeness in perpetuity in the universe. And to really be fighting for the rights to my own voice, and my own face, to myself. Like what are we talking about for it to go on and on, nine years is a long time. Like one stranger on Twitter that I should not be on Twitter, but I was and I saw them and like that would carry me for a really long time. 💭 How long are you staying (in Japan)??? 🌻 I’m not staying that long. And… not that long. I’ll just make it quick, keep it short, travel, and then… also, my friend from middle and high school… with that friend from middle and high school, I also decided to go on a trip to Japan together. So I’ll be with my family, and then my family… my family will go back to Korea, and I’ll go straight to another ar- (laughs) another area, and take another really short trip with my friend, and then I’ll probably go back. 🌻 Ah, and my friend had been really worried because he said that finding a job wasn’t going well. He had been like that for a while, and I kept encouraging him, and then he said he got a job. So I was like, “Oh, you got a job?!” and told him, “Congratulations so much!” But he said he got a job at a Japanese company, so starting next year… he said he has to live in Japan starting next year. So I was like, “Ah, in Japan…” (laughs) “So you’re going to live in Japan starting next year.” And then when I thought about it… next year, I’ll pretty much only go abroad when I’m working - only when I’m going for work, and if things go like this, (laughs) there’s a high chance we won’t be able to see each other for a long time. So I just said, “You’re going to live in Japan now, so to celebrate you getting a job in Japan, let’s just go on a short trip to Japan.” 🌻 Ah, but this is that friend I usually talk about. When we actually meet, we go to a PC bang (internet/gaming café). It’s nice to see each other when we meet in the neighborhood, but there’s nothing to do, so we go to a PC bang (laughs), then just briefly stop by a café. That’s the friend I was talking about.
