🚨 Announcing a new SOTA memory system, Observational Memory (OM), available in latest Mastra version now. It achieves the highest scores ever recorded on LongMemEval (gpt-4o 84.2%, gpt-5-mini 94.9%) No RAG, no graphs, no input based retrieval, just a simple constantly evolving text blob that outperforms every other memory...

How it works: Background agents act as the subconscious memory of your main agent, monitoring message histories and creating dense observations that are seen by the main agent. Your agent never queries or writes to memory — it remembers effortlessly. We've seen compression rates of 6-40x token reduction (higher with more tool calls). This allows small context windows to behave like much larger ones.

You might wonder, wont it drop details? We wondered that too, so we measured. The results show that these dense observations actually outperform gpt-4o vs when it's given the raw answer conversations directly (+2%). If you haven't heard of it, LongMemEval is a memory benchmark with 500 questions that span ~57M tokens of conversation history. We attached observational memory and ran the benchmark:

gpt-4o (official benchmark model): 84.2%, SOTA. 2% higher than when the llm is given only the answer sessions! 2.6% higher than the previous SOTA score. gpt-5-mini: 94.9%, SOTA. highest score ever recorded with any model.

OM is open source and shipping in Mastra now, check the docs or read our announcement post to learn more: I'll be joining @mastra's Agents Hour today to talk about it more in a couple hours, come say hi!

Note that the demo video above is using async buffering which ships tomorrow - the available version today blocks the conversation while observations are made. You can try the async version by bumping all your Mastra depencies to the `oma` tag (`@mastra/core@oma`, `@mastra/memory@oma`, `mastra@oma`, etc)

This is genuinely fascinating. A few questions: 1. How do the background observer agents decide what's worth compressing into an observation versus what gets dropped? Is there a salience threshold, or does the density emerge organically from the model's own judgment about what matters? 2. When you say "constantly evolving text blob" — is the observation document append-only, or do earlier observations get revised/overwritten as newer context changes their relevance? If it rewrites, how do you prevent the loss of details that seemed unimportant at the time but become critical later? 3. The +2% over raw answer sessions is the most interesting number here to me. That suggests the compression isn't just preserving information — it's actually *organizing* it in a way the LLM can reason over more effectively than raw conversation. Have you looked into *why* that's happening? Is the observer essentially doing pre-reasoning that the main agent benefits from? 4. What does failure look like at the edges? The 84.2% and 94.9% are impressive, but what kinds of questions fall into that remaining 5-15%? Are they temporal reasoning failures, subtle detail losses, or something else? 5. How does this interact with multi-user or multi-topic contexts? The benchmark spans ~57M tokens — but is that a single coherent conversation thread or interleaved topics? Curious whether OM handles context-switching between unrelated subjects gracefully or if it tends to blur boundaries. 6. At 6-40x compression, what's the practical ceiling before observation quality degrades? Is there a conversation length where the blob itself starts exceeding useful context window size, and if so, do you layer observers on observers? Really compelling work. The "subconscious memory" framing isn't just marketing — if the observer agents are genuinely doing background synthesis that the main agent accesses passively, that's architecturally closer to how human memory consolidation actually works than anything RAG-based.

1. it does emerge organically, the observer/reflector see all previous reflections so they understand the intent of what the main agent is doing, observations are geared towards that. An observation about a tool result is made in context with all previous steps that were taken 2. We store "generations" of observations. Within each generation the observer can only append. When reflection happens it creates a brand new generation that completely replaces the previous one. So reflection rewrites the whole thing. For now anything lost is gone! This is by design - so that it can operate like human memory where we're able to naturally forget details that no longer seem important without choosing to forget. We will be adding a tool that allows the agent to "refresh" it's memory by searching through previous generations (and raw messages). Those results would then naturally be observed again and reinforced as being important at observation/reflection time. 3. yes there is definitely some "pre-reasoning". During reflection the agent is instructed to combine related items and draw parallels and connections between things. We also instruct the observer to insert temporal markers, which we parse and add relative time to. So if an observation was "The user plans to do x this weekend (meaning Feb 14th 2025)" we add in time relative to today, so we rewrite that to "(meaning Feb 14th 2026 - one year ago)". 4. the simplicity of the system actually made it pretty easy for me to debug some of the failing answers. I found 20/500 that have incorrect answers or misleading questions. Just because I was able to read the observations and cross reference with the eval source data and realize "oh wow, this person from the answer isn't mentioned at all in the questions attached sessions". gpt-4o is a pretty bad/expensive model at this point - but newer models scoring higher gives a better sense of the memory systems ability. 94% across 57M input tokens is quite good recall! especially if some percent contains incorrect answers. I considered making a new longmemeval dataset where the errors are found/fixed, but not sure if I'll have time to fully commit to something like that. 5. the 500 questions each have roughly 50 unique sessions each, each question spans the ~50 conversations, depending on the question category (knowledge-update, temporal-reasoning, etc) 6. this is built into the system! reflection is intended to handle this - observation storage is configured with a max size and it's the reflectors job to re-organize memory to fit within it. There is of course a limit, but it's far higher than you'd think! And like I mentioned we'll be adding a tool to "refresh" memory beyond that point lol wall of text! But thank you! Yes, the observer/reflector system prompts explicitly tell those agents that they're part of the subconscious memory of the main agent - they understand what their observations/reflections will be used for. The original idea was indeed to emulate human memory to see how well it works. Turns out it works quite well!

@mastra impressive compression, but a single evolving blob shifts risk to information loss and drift......without slice-level evals, its hard to know which details disappear quietly as the context scales....

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

This is a totally valid concern - anecdotally I've been using this for months and find it to work great in this regard. Information loss at scale is an intended feature - the ability to forget things that are no longer relevant is part of what makes human memory so impressive for ex. fwiw with longmemeval, ~57M input tokens run through this and we achieve higher scores than memory systems that store data in a non-lossy way (RAG for ex). We also see gpt-4o performing better with it than with the raw conversations containing the answers. This is likely due to temporal reasoning markers which are actually not present (total data loss!) in raw message histories with llms, but are added by OM. So we do compress, but we also enhance the observed data. Sorry, wall of text 😆 but soon we will also add a tool that allows the agent to query all previous messages and memory iterations - to be able to "refresh" their memory if they don't have all the details anymore. That tool result would then be re-ingested into the memory system naturally and observed again as something that was important to remember. So lots of possibilities and room for improvement still!

@mastra Thats a thoughtful approach..... intentional forgetting plus reinforcement and refresh paths is a real design space worth exploring, and the gains you are seeing suggest memory quality matters more than raw retention....

@mastra great work It would be great to show latency for writes and reads Also are you always sending 30k tokens for each question!? that is a very large amount of tokens - I wonder how that impacts costs considering that you're using such an expensive model

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

In an agent loop with multiple steps, 30k cached/stable tokens will be far cheaper than repeated requests that contain 5k dynamically uncached tokens. It's 30k after ingesting tons of data - this is all prompt cacheable context, making it much cheaper. The system becomes more useful for long horizon tasks/chats, especially those that contain tool calls. For systems that just need to answer a one off question, RAG in a workflow would be better suited. Then you can use 2-3k (or however much) uncached tokens and pay the uncached price each time

Nicolò Boschi 的头像
Nicolò Boschi8 个月前

if data changes often you lose all the caching, still the caching happens at the beginning of the prompt and the agent loop likely uses a different prompt each time. Even assuming that it's better, what happens if the data is 5x times the longmemeval dataset question? You will be always bound to that upper limit (30k configurable) also you're adding a tons of useless context each time if the agent needs to know a specific information happened during the conversation Also what model did you use to create the summary for each conversation? That might add up quickly in the cogs if you need a smarty model

@mastra no rag no graphs just vibes and it still beats everything on the benchmark lol. memory for ai agents has been the missing piece for so long and this approach is actually elegant compared to the overcomplicated stuff out there

@mastra Thanks Adriana, glad to hear it's resonating with you! We're always wondering "can we make things simpler while also making them work better?" for many things you can't, but this turned out to be a perfect case of exactly that

Retention scores like LongMemEval are solid, but most memory systems retain successes without pruning failure paths — so agents retry dead-ends indefinitely. The structural fix is Negative Memory (explicit index of pruned failures checked before each attempt), shrinking search space from 40 to 12 attempts. Does OM have a failure-pruning layer to break loops? 🇳🇴

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

the observer and reflector handle this naturally, any failed attempts become observations (so each agent in the system can see them). Over time when memory is reflected the agent has a chance to note "assistant tried to solve x in 5 ways" and then list them and why they failed. Natural degredation/consolidation of memory happens at reflection time

@mastra What's the cost of all those agents running in the backgrounds writing to this big file? And how big can it get before it's unusable/impossible to load?

Tyler Barnes 的头像

The observer agent only sees new multi-step message history output 1 time per group of messages. There will be a minimal additional cost but in agentic use cases, the ability for the entire main agents context window to be cacheable will offset this into making it overall cheaper to run. Since observer/reflector don't need to do the actual agentic work, you can also use cheaper models - I've been trying out running ministral-3-3b locally in LMStudio for observer, turns out it works great and has very little cost. For observation size growing unbounded, that's why we added the reflector agent. You configure the max total allowable size (in tokens) for the system, and once it's exceeded, the reflector rewrites the memory block, combining related items to save space, noting connections between things, and dropping information that's no longer relevant. In practise this makes it work more similar to human memory which comes with graceful memory degredation (the ability to forget things which no longer matter)

Appreciate the lenghty explanation Tyler! You’ve confirmed that it’s pretty much thr same idea I have tried - with the main difference that I’ve used @helixdb as my memory bank. In my implementation I had a “scribe” that was hooked into Claude Stop hook - reading the session log and extracting memories. But I think I used Haiku for that instead of some local fast model, and it caused a lot of issues. So I’m excited to see you have promising results. Maybe I should OpenSource/update my implementation - even if it’s bad maybe someone can find the issues and fix it.

@mastra @helixdb Yeah man, when in doubt OSS it! fwiw in this system I found haiku (actually all claude models) to perform poorly as observer/reflector. All other models I tried work great, but claude led to data loss (100-300x compression 😅)

@mastra Is it better to provide it a structured schema to steer what it updates? Or you’ve found freeform text works best?

I think it depends on the use case - our aim was to make a general purpose memory system. For agentic use cases, generally everything that happens is relevant. The observer/reflector naturally retain information relevant to the general task. So if a web search return 20k tokens of completely unrelated info, the observer would note something like "assistant searched the web for x, and found many unrelated results". We are planning on adding the ability to extend the observer/reflector system prompts though, if you want them to be very particular about retaining certain kinds of information

@mastra I see, yeah that would be helpful!

@mastra For context the use case for us is updating user preferences over long horizon, so was thinking not everything is relevant but we have an idea on what matters in the context of our app

Tyler Barnes 的头像

We've been floating the idea of adding an additional schema backed data store for the observer to write to, but we don't have anything concrete just yet. The nice thing with this system is it manages your conversation history, prompt cacheability, and overall max context window size while also remembering preferences. So it helps solve multiple problems at the same time

@mastra I've wondered if you could have one of the file logging apps continuously watching/scanning all open terminals and writing to 3rd party mem app. Like but for mem for terminal agents.

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

We're planning on opening up the ability to call the observer agent directly, something like memory.observe(x). When we add that it will make these kinds of use cases much easier to implement. You could listen for logs and periodically call .observe(logs, customPrompt) and have whatever's happening ingest into the memory system

@mastra Is there a plan to support this for opus 4.5? Is this only specific to 4.5 or does 4.6 also fall into the same category? Super curious to know how you'd be tackling that.

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

@mastra Hey @RiqwanMThamir it's not locked to any llm provider or model! You can use it with anything you like

@mastra Ah, apologies for the vagueness. I was referring to the observer/reflector model. Not blocking, just out of curiosity.

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

ahh I see! so you can use it, but the problem right now is it results in data loss (compression rates of 100-300x). We're shipping the background observation buffering today (shown in the demo video) and it allows for making observations on smaller chunks of messages at a time. I haven't tried it yet (just haven't had time yet) but this may solve the claude issue. I think something about how claude models were trained don't allow them to properly observe everything, maybe it has too much personality or something 😆

@mastra haha, I've noticed that on longer contexts Opus goes a little too specific on recent X tokens (not necessarily the latest) and hyperfocus on that. But amazing work on this, super elegant solution! Surprised it hasn't gone more viral.

alex wang 的头像

@mastra So from my understanding, it's basically more token usage and cost (from having a background agent(s)) for a marginally better increase in performance?

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

when compared to other memory systems it will be cheaper, not more expensive, because it allows for prompt caching to work. most providers discount cached prompts by 4-10x. you can use a cheaper model to make observations. it also allows shorter context windows to behave like longer ones. i run my own coding agent harness with om in it and i set message history to 30k and observations to 40k. when i use a typical coding agent harness it will use up to full 200k+ context window, over twice as many tokens at max length. so this is a smaller cached context window. observer also only ever sees each set of raw messages one time

@mastra In the evals for a model do you use the same model for running the observer and the reflector?

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

@mastra Yea, what @abhiaiyer said! We used gemini flash when ingesting data because it's the default model we recommend. Would be super interesting to run the same benchmark across multiple observer/reflector models too, but that's for another day 😁

@mastra What happens for extremely long running use cases where the observation / reflection limit is exceeded? It'll just have to keep dropping old details right, or does that get stored in another semantic retrieval layer?

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

The thresholds go much further than you'd expect! I have a few months old chat that's going strong and has the memory of multiple completed feature implementations (in a coding agent) and can still recap everything we did. The system is designed to gracefully decay memories - similar to human memory where you remember things generally but after a few years need to look up and refresh your memory on details. "a few years" in this parallel might be months (or days) depending on how big the volume of input tokens is for your use case. But yes you can also pair this with another retrieval based memory system. When doing so I recommend adding retrieval as a tool call (to maintain prompt cache). We will likely add this as a builtin feature. This would give the agent the ability to "refresh" its memory on a topic

@mastra Great stuff! Looks like the next logical step is to produce a graph like structure, since you just compress observation on overflow but you will lose a lot of valuable stuff in process.

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

For sure, I did prototype what I was calling "memory bank" where it would just collapse older sections of observations and insert an ID which the agent could use to expand it. I ended up removing it from the initial POC because it worked so well without it. For extremely long horizon memory I think it will be needed, but this goes much farther than you'd expect

@mastra These things are pointless unless you bench them against things people can use and verify without a paid subscription. What about vs memU and/or memvid?

Tyler Barnes 的头像
Tyler Barnes8 个月前

Are you referring to this MemU? Looks like they only publish LoCoMo scores. We ran those too but didn't share (even with high scores). LoCoMo uses f1 scoring which is not a good metric, so everyone who publishes writes their own LLM as judge implementation with custom judge prompts. This makes none of the LoCoMo results comparable to each other, because no one shares their F1 scores, just their custom llm judge scores. When we implemented it we realized we would have to share a different score for each competitor and use the same judging prompts they used, because everyone does it differently. Depending on who's judge prompts we used, the score varied 5-10%... Hopefully locomo will make a v2 which fixes this flaw, so that locomo scores can be useful to compare.

@mastra btw @manthanguptaa we released the async background buffering version of this earlier today. If you tried it before, it's worth upgrading as there's no no additional blocking latency, and the observer runs on smaller buffered chunks of messages
