The secret to productivity is having multiple projects going at once. If you’re a natural procrastinator—which I can be—you’ll often find yourself avoiding the one thing you really need to do. But instead of doing nothing, you trick yourself into working on something else that still feels productive. So if I had one especially urgent project with a looming deadline, I’d suddenly feel compelled to work on one of my other projects instead. That way, even my procrastination became useful. I used this strategy all through grad school, when I was building my newsletter, writing my PhD thesis, working on academic papers, and drafting my book—all at the same time. Whenever I couldn’t bring myself to work on one of them, I’d just switch to another. And over time, somehow, they all got done.
