When we followed her, we found her standing at the entrance of a travelling agency office. The officer came out and told us she had been abandoned there by her owner. And since that day, she checks this office five times a day, still hoping that one day her owner will walk out of that door for her. Poor mama, not knowing he was never coming back for her at all. But today her waiting was finally over because we were here now. This was the moment we finally brought her to her new home. But she just walked slowly to a corner and quietly laid down there. Her eyes were open but they were distant and deeply sad. She was not just tired, she was heartbroken and we understood that completely."

Ten years ago a one-tusked wild elephant turned up at Ithumba – she was so disruptive that the Keepers nicknamed her 'Crazy One'. She has come a long way since then! Over the years our orphans taught her that the Keepers could be trusted, and today she moves freely between the wild and our Ithumba Unit, even taking our ex-orphans under her wing. Last year, she brought a newborn of her own into the fold, mimicking the behaviour of our ex-orphans in choosing to introduce her precious calf to her extended human-elephant herd. She told her parents; they too confronted Shafi. But the harassment did not stop. He used to follow her, forced her to get into a relationship with him and more. Fed up, the girl committed suicide by hanging herself on June 17. The accused is yet to be arrested.

A year and a day ago, I lost a very special friend. What started through Make-A-Wish became a friendship I’ll always treasure. Daily, I would get a video or text from her and her friends…She brought so much joy into my life, and I miss hearing from her. I have yet to break the habit of waiting for a video from her. They truly made me smile. When I learned she wasn’t doing well, I got on a plane to Minnesota to be with her. She passed while I was in the air. Her family showed me a kindness I’ll never forget by letting me say goodbye. They also gave me her favorite blanket and the journal she kept about our time together. I still haven’t been able to read it. One day, I will. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about her. She reminded everyone around her how much light one person can bring into their day and their lives, no matter how short their time here. Missing you always. ❤️
