Every British officer was was either killed or wounded which tells you that the French and the Indians were trying to take out the officers. Washington was the only one to survive without being wounded. Read about the Battle of Monmouth. Washington rallied retreating troops while constantly exposing himself to cannon and musket fire. As far as there being no expert marksman read about the Battle of Saratoga. Daniel Morgans sharpshooter took out British officers during the battle.
