Another incredible slow-mo self-destruct on the Chinook style

This issue could have been easily prevented by attaching the payload underneath the two motors directly using a cable sling. Then there wouldn't have been any bending moment on the main beam at all.

Amazing view of the power of resonance!

The rotors:

It went from chinook to husky for a split second there 😅

Basic engineering failure - may be dont make it foldable in the direction where the props pull. 🤣

So, not to keep hammering on the same point, but: a regular helicopter doesn't have this problem. The motor, the battery, and the payload all sit directly underneath the main rotor. The fact that you need one small extra rotor to control yaw does not negate these advantages.

the self-destruct is a requirement?

They both had wild crashes

Darpas so awesome for hosting shit like this knowing damn well they have neurocraft

🎵Talkin' 'bout my resonation🎵 🎵Yeah, my resonation🎵 Isn't that a Beetles song or sumtn? 🤣

Do they give awards for the coolest crashes?

the real chinook did this too for structural resonance tests 😭

Reminds me of bridge building contests

@grok how many entries were there in total? What was the process of elimination like?

@grok They said now on stream 500 teams applied

Um.. seems like the folding in the middle is a bad design.

The only way to get better is to try, fail, then try again He who doesn’t try, shall never fail He who doesn’t fail, never really tried Plus you get great videos to teach others what NOT to do.

Ahhh

I am so glad the Chinooks are getting obliterated lmao.

Didn't any of these teams actually test their stuff?

Needs more portapotties

Do any of the teams used the synchrotor configuration?

Goodness how does one even sync 2 blades like that

Two dragonflies going at it mid-flight 😂

I wonder what the weight difference would be to use aluminum frame instead of composite, gotta be less risk of resonance stress failure right?

Did resonance crushed it ?

Aeroelasticity is a beast.

I hoped it will destroy some porta potties too. :(

Brilliant example of the problem with any multi-rotor designs: Structure needs to be strong enough to not bend, or all kinds of funky stuff starts happening when the rotors apply lift unevenly.

those rotors had a mututal restraining order because of their destructive nature and went for a kiss anyways
