JUDGE EXPELS KANU FROM COURTROOM, FINAL VERDICT UNDERWAY The Federal High Court has witnessed dramatic scenes in the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra. Justice James Omotosho ordered Kanu out of the courtroom after he became unruly midway through Thursday’s proceedings, with the trial judge set to deliver judgment in a case spanning ten years. The judge had earlier dismissed three fresh motions filed by Kanu, ruling them unmeritorious. As the court prepared to deliver judgment, Kanu objected, insisting he had not filed his final written address. I note Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s remarks in a TV interview this morning. Neither he nor his Party has made those proposals as part of the process of constitutional reform. His proposals are therefore not in the report of the Constitutional Reform Committee, and will not be in the new Constitution coming out of that process. Furthermore, Mr. Holness’s proposals are not in the existing Constitution, and would violate the existing Constitution. This is in keeping with his and his Government’s unfortunate history of past violations of the Constitution of Jamaica. It seems that the Prime Minister wants to make up a rule which is not part of the Constitution or laws of Jamaica, to suit his Party’s political fortune at a time when it is waning. He has no power and no authority to do that. He needs to tell the country why his statutory declarations to the Integrity Commission cannot be certified. I am compliant with the Constitution and laws of Jamaica, and I undertake to the People of Jamaica that I will continue to be so.

And we certainly think that they violated [federal] fair housing laws. If you're going to live in our country, you have to follow our state and federal laws. You have to follow our Constitution. You can't develop your own little community and then decide that you're going to determine your own laws that are separate and apart from the laws of the nation. And that is what's happening."

America’s federal marijuana laws simply do NOT make sense, and the enforcement of these laws are riddled with hypocrisy and injustice. We should be appalled that in this country some people, predominately and disproportionately Black and Latino citizens, are jailed, prevented from getting jobs, and/or struggle with finding housing…all because they did the same thing Senators, Congresspeople, and even Presidents have admitted to doing - even though there is no difference in usage rates between races or ethnicities. This double standard needs to end. It’s time the federal government to decriminalize cannabis and take action to right these past wrongs, which is why I’m proud that earlier this week, along with my colleagues Senators Widen and Schumer, we reintroduced the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act.

She listed all the standards a man must meet before she would consider marriage, and her own mother ended the performance with one sentence: “You did not have all those standards for the other men you had children with. If you did, you would be married.” That was not disrespect. That was a mother refusing to let revisionist history masquerade as wisdom.
