Here we have the iPhone 13 at 60hz vs S23 Ultra at 120hz. Notice the S23 Ultra has smoother transitions but the animations are bad because of it being non-linear. There's a difference between refresh rate and animations. Sure iPhone looked smooth because of the animations, but the S23 Ultra had more frames in the animations because of the higher refresh rate. But then Samsung messed up with its linear animations. Hopefully, with one UI 6, we see the non-linear animations coupled with 120hz.

Scroll-triggered animations are coming to Chrome early next year (and we've been really excited about this one for a bit!) 🥳 Unlike scroll-driven animations (already in Chrome & Safari), this API introduces "timeline-trigger" and "animation-trigger" to start an animation within a specific range, rather than relying on the scroller completion *as* the animation timeline. I got nerd-sniped and wanted to try it out so I built this shape morphing demo to show how you can apply multiple animations to the same element over with different triggers. PRETTY COOL IMO! When we start adding characters, it becomes very difficult to achieve the exact animation, gesture, or movement we are looking of all of them in a single generation. In addition, the more characters are added, the more rigid Seedance 2.0 animations become in order to maintain consistency. This is especially visible in styles with squash and stretch and rubber hose animations, where the characters deform their body parts as if they were made of rubber, or in highly expressive movement animations in anime. Engineering might be super sub-par in Midnight, but it does have one amazing thing: an embellishment that causes races with special jump animations to ALWAYS use that special animation. It's useable even by non-engineers too, and doesn't count towards the 2-embellishment cap.

Burned 200k tokens just for "animations" and still AI couldn't do it well. I tried one of the expert animation design engineer's, Emil Kowalski's Agent Skill on my website to improve animation using Grok 4.5 It analyzed the UI, found issues, came up with a good plan, and iterated multiple times. The end result actually made parts of the UX worse. Also, it never suggested the animation experience I had in mind. So I explained exactly how I wanted it to feel. It got much closer, but still missed details like applying the same animation during keyboard navigation between cards. That silly. The lesson isn't about the model or the Agent Skill. But it's about, "Even the strongest models can't infer your taste yet." They can't and won't suggest it. AI only executes. You have to define the experience with enough details for it to execute. Otherwise, you'll end up with something that's almost okay, but still not what you wanted
