At least nine people have died after a cruise boat operated by the Madhya Pradesh tourism department capsized in Bargi Dam on the Narmada river near Jabalpur on Thursday evening. Officials said the vessel, carrying around 43 passengers including crew members, overturned after being caught in a sudden and severe storm. The weather changed abruptly around 6pm, with wind speeds reported between 60–70 kmph, creating turbulent conditions in the dam. Authorities said the high-velocity winds likely destabilised the boat, causing it to lose control and capsize. Search and rescue operations continued late into Thursday night with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), state disaster units and local administration deployed at the site. The death toll rose to nine after additional bodies were recovered on Friday. Several survivors have alleged lapses in safety measures, claiming life jackets were distributed only after the vessel began sinking. “There were no visible safety measures during the journey. This video of the government-owned boat that sank in Lake Kariba, killing tens of people, is a reflection of Zimbabwe’s public infrastructure, which has been destroyed by incompetence, nepotism and, more importantly, corruption. The video shows how the boat was allowed to pack passengers like sardines, how those left on land talked about how the idea of the journey was a bad idea and how the end started to unfold. This is a 43-year-old boat owned by a government agency. It is battered and clearly in a terrible state. Nowhere in a functional country would a boat in this condition be allowed to carry passengers, let alone 153 people when it was supposed to carry a maximum of 45. This is negligence of the highest order. The government has sent these people to their deaths, and it must take full responsibility. Again, in a normal country, and I hope that in this respect Zimbabwe can be a normal country, there would be lawyers willing to take up pro bono cases against the government on behalf of the families of those who died. When you have a government agency operating such a battered boat, no government authority stopping it from being used, and apparently no effective system ensuring that basic passenger and safety limits are respected, then the state has catastrophically failed to discharge its duty to protect citizens. This avoidable accident has now been declared a national disaster, but declaring it a national disaster does not bring these people back. It does not answer the fundamental questions about how this was allowed to happen. Who inspected this boat? Who certified it as safe to carry passengers? Who was responsible for enforcing its maximum passenger capacity? How could a boat meant to carry no more than 45 people end up carrying 153 without being stopped by anyone? Who knew about its condition, and what did they do about it? This tragedy must be used not only to hold those responsible accountable, but also to make sure that something like this never happens again. There must be an independent investigation, and its findings must be made public. Those whose negligence contributed to these deaths must face consequences, regardless of their positions or political connections. In a normal country, the Minister of Transport should have resigned before the end of today. Let us not forget that RIDA falls under the President’s office, while the Transport ministry has responsibility for the regulatory framework governing the transportation of people and public safety. But we all know that in Zimbabwe, ministers are too often not appointed on account of their competence. They are appointed on account of political loyalty and how much they are willing to bootlick the President. When competence, accountability and professionalism are replaced by patronage, this is the result you end up with. Disaster! These were human beings whose families expected them to come home. Declaring a national disaster and issuing condolences are not enough. There must be accountability, there must be justice for the victims and their families, and there must be fundamental changes to ensure that Zimbabweans are never again sent to their deaths because those entrusted with protecting them failed to do their jobs. The fact that nobody has resigned simply shows how Zimbabwe is not a Banana Republic.

I have visited the Bargi backwaters, where boats are modified to carry more passengers, often operated by untrained crews—making disaster only a moment away. Physics always bears the brunt. The waves at the dam are short and resemble multiple speed breakers in succession. Yet, this is India—nothing will change. No accountability will be enforced. As BJP politicians smugly declare that resignation don't happen in the party because it is a party with a difference. Despite all this I see armymen chipping in to help in the hours of grief of devastated families.

🚨 OUTRAGE: The man charged in the death of Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira Jr. is now reportedly a Haitian national who was in the country illegally and still managed to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License from Massachusetts. Let that sink in. A state trooper is dead, a family is destroyed, and now Americans are being asked to believe this is just some random accident with no bigger policy failure behind it. No. If someone is not legally supposed to be in the country, they should not be operating massive commercial trucks on American highways, period. Massachusetts needs to answer for how this license was issued, the CDL rolls need a serious federal audit, and every loophole that allows illegal immigrants to drive heavy commercial vehicles must be shut down immediately. This is not about politics anymore. This is about public safety, accountability, and protecting American lives before another officer, driver, or family pays the price.

Under maritime law, the captain holds ultimate authority and accountability for the vessel from the moment it casts off until it docks. After that, the gate was changed more than three times, with zero clarity and zero accountability. There was absolutely no concern for passengers with connecting flights. No food. No lounge access. I was just caught in a teen takeover at the Hyde Park Trader Joe’s and it’s STILL going on at this moment. Multiple fights and swarms in Hyde Park. This is unacceptable. This is dangerous. And Chicago residents should not have to wonder if a routine grocery trip will turn into chaos. Teen takeovers are not harmless. They put families, seniors, workers, shoppers, drivers, and young people themselves at risk. Mayor Brandon Johnson, Governor Pritzker, and local aldermen can no longer treat this like a public relations problem. This is a public safety crisis, and it requires real action. We need: ✅ A visible public safety plan for high-risk areas ✅ Coordination between CPD, state officials, businesses, and community leaders ✅ Consequences for organized lawlessness ✅ Support for parents and guardians ✅ Safe youth programming that does not excuse criminal behavior ✅ Protection for workers, shoppers, and residents Compassion without accountability is not leadership. The latest incident, which occurred at Kamlik Filling Station, claimed the lives of two innocent Nigerians after a heavy-duty truck carrying a container fell onto a commercial tricycle (keke napep). What is even more disturbing is not just the accident itself, but the disgraceful response that followed. For 8 to 10 hours, the scene was left unattended with no crane, no urgent intervention, no sense of responsibility. Lives were lost, and yet the system remained slow, silent, and indifferent. Allah says in the Qur’an: “Whoever kills a soul… it is as if he had slain mankind entirely; and whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” (Qur’an 5:32) What we are witnessing is not just negligence, it is a collective failure to protect life, which Islam holds as sacred above all. This is not an accident, it is a failure of leadership and accountability. The level of recklessness on that expressway both from drivers and, more importantly from the authorities responsible for regulating and maintaining the road has reached an unacceptable level. Human life has been reduced to mere numbers. We have repeatedly raised alarms, called for action, and demanded safety measures, yet those in power have chosen silence and inaction. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) Those in authority will answer not just to the public but before Allah for every life lost under their watch due to negligence. Let it be clearly stated: The continued delay in completing this road project, coupled with the absence of emergency response infrastructure, is a direct threat to public safety. The authorities and contractors handling this project have consistently failed in their duty, and the Kaduna State Government must no longer remain passive. We demand immediate and decisive action such as: - Deploy proper emergency response systems along the expressway, including cranes and rapid rescue teams. - Enforce strict regulations on heavy-duty vehicles operating on this route. - Fast-track the completion of the road project without further excuses. - Hold all negligent parties accountable. The Prophet ﷺ also said: “There should be neither harm nor reciprocating harm.” (Ibn Majah) What is happening on this expressway is continuous harm, and allowing it to persist is injustice.
