So yes, it matters to us when ideologies that are destructive to our species are forced in schools and you bet your ass we're going to fight back with every spark of divine spirit we've got!

Our kids are not for sale. We’re moving forward with a first-in-Canada plan to ban social media and AI chatbots for youth - because these platforms are built to capture attention, not protect it. Childhood should be about learning, growing, and being present. Not endless scrolling designed for profit. We owe the next generation something simple: the freedom to be kids. A lot done. A lot more to do.

Here is what Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, says during a discussion with Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia: (1) When we train a large neural network to accurately predict the next word in lots of different texts from the internet, the AI is learning a world model. It is the darkest irony of our time that to be a good person—or a good, progressive nation—you must support and celebrate modern medicine’s most atrocious crime. The international response to dealing with this scandal right now is chaotic, but the solution is actually very simple: Restore reality. Defend the right of children to a childhood grounded in truth and the right of all young people to grow up healthy and whole. Stop bombarding young people with an incoherent, anti-reality political ideology, and start protecting them from it instead. Reject prioritizing the desires of extremist activists over the safeguarding of children. And face the reality that trans kids do not exist. What does exist are children and adolescents trying to make sense of themselves in a world that has abandoned reason in favour of ideology—young people being lied to at a crucial stage of identity development, who face consequences that will haunt them for a lifetime. Elon Musk talks about how SpaceX can provide low cost and high bandwidth internet to parts of the world that don't have it or where its very expensive to use. This is part of the $DUOL bull thesis. While many are focused on their Mom and Grandma Claude Coding a Duolingo replica in their pajamas before tea time, I'm focused on $ASTS and Starlink providing internet to parts of the world that don't have it. These companies effectively expand the TAM for Duolingo and other products and services by 30%. There are approximately 2.5-3 billion people that still do not have internet on Earth. Once they have access, their immediate instincts will shift to learning, especially learning the English language in a structured way. Learning english will give them access to better jobs and allow them to support their families via higher income from the english speaking job (can be applied to chinese and other languages as well).

At the heart of children’s social and emotional development is self-awareness – a growing sense of who they are as individuals. Over the next several weeks I’ll be partnering with The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood (the UK’s Royal Foundation Centre on Early Childhood) to explore children’s social and emotional development in celebration of the Centre’s newest publication, The Shaping Us Framework (a link to which you can find in the first reply below). For infants, knowing oneself – the first of six skill clusters identified in the Framework – is a skill developed from square one. Which is to say that, as newborns, we are not yet equipped with the self-awareness necessary to understand ourselves as independent beings. Indeed, it is not until 6-9 months of age that we begin to realize that we are separate from our caregivers. How we come to understand ourselves is, in part, a reflection on how we are responded to from our earliest moments. Speaking of reflections, did you know that it’s not until 15-18 months that infants recognize that the reflection in a mirror is actually them? Check out this lovely video example, shared to TT by talinfakhoorian, in which her son finds delight in interacting with the hilarious new “friend” he’s found in the mirror. As he grows, his sense of self will develop in important new ways. In the next post in this series, I’ll talk about the emergence of agency and the importance of allowing your toddler to make appropriate choices of their own.

Q: Where is being told you look like a garbage truck a sincere form of flattery? A: In the best and most important job ever. In honor of Labor Day, I want to take a moment to uplift our nation’s early childhood educators. If you take anything away from my posts at all, let it be this: the years of early childhood are uniquely consequential. The period from prenatal to five is when the fundamental architecture of the brain is wired, ideally setting children on the path to longterm success in school and life. But we have a giant mismatch between the science and our public policy when it comes to how we support and compensate our young children’s teachers. Did you know that the median wage for preschool teachers (in child care settings) is only $13.22 an hour - less than we pay most fast food employees? Teachers who work with young children in public school settings do a little better, but still worse than their peers working with older students. This is, in part, because we persistently fail to recognize what I’ve tried to use my timeline to help illustrate: that learning begins LONG before children enter kindergarten. If we want to maximize brain development - and minimize the long term costs to society caused by our failure to do so - we simply must focus on the supports needed by adults, both in and out of the home, who do this hard, but joyful work. Put simply, our nation’s early childhood workforce deserves better. And our children need them to be trained and compensated like the literal brain builders they are. On this Labor Day, I thank early childhood educators. And hope you’ll do the same. This video offers just a quick glimpse of the joy of working with preschoolers.
