Anthony Joshua's speech left me speechless, so articulate, so powerful, so deeply rooted in pride for his heritage. But what breaks my heart the most, what hurts beyond anything else, is the memory of his friends who were taken in that crash. Ayodeji and Sina. I keep wishing it... had been different. I wish they had only been injured. I wish they had lost a limb, a leg, an arm or anything, as long as they were still here, still breathing, still smiling with those beautiful faces. Those guys were too young, too full of light, too damn special to be gone forever. If God came to me today and granted me just two wishes, I wouldn’t even hesitate. This is San Francisco in 1985. I miss my grandparents. I miss all of my family who are no longer here. When my grandparents came to visit, we would go to SFO to pick them up, and no one was ever happier to see me than they were. This was back when you could walk right up to the gate. I was always excited to see if this would be the year I was finally taller than my grandma. Having them in town was the best. The meals my grandma cooked for us were amazing, and their stories were always just as great. We would take them to San Francisco and do all the touristy stuff like North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf, but none of that really mattered. What mattered was that we were all together. They’ve been gone for years now, but I think of them often. I wonder what it would have been like to talk to them as an adult, to connect in a different way than I could as a kid. I guess life isn't really designed that way for everyone, to grow up and have those deeper conversations, to understand who they were beyond being your grandparents. But I have gotten to know them in new ways, through old photos, home movies, and the stories other family members have shared with me. It amazes me to think of the full lives they both lived long before I was ever born. If you still have your grandparents, give them a call. Say hello. Learn as much as you can from them while you still can.

I guess I can’t cry now… They always traveled long distances back and forth for years, taking me and picking me up, and they worried about me so much. But they trusted me and said, 'Just do what you want! If it’s what you want, then do it!' They just believed in me and pushed me forward, and I think I’ve always been grateful for that. Without that, would I have been able to meet NSWER? I’ve been thinking about that more these days, so I’m really thankful. Mom always says, 'You have so much love in you, what are you going to do?' When I lived in Yangsan, I wasn’t such a kid who cried this much, but after I came to Seoul, I started crying so much. I think that worried her a bit. Mom! I’m really happy. I’ve been injured since 2017, almost nine long years. Practically all of that time I spent wallowing in self-pity. “Woe to be me,” and all that. I let the pain I was in dictate every single decision I made. I was angry, and I fought with my friends for any and every reason. I’m honestly shocked that they tried as hard as they did to help me. I definitely didn’t deserve it. In the end I lost them, but I still love them and I’ll keep reaching out. The four months after my injury was the angriest I’ve ever been in my life. I would get drunk and stoned, and say the most awful, mean shit to the people that loved me and were just trying to help. The first 3 to 4 years of my injury was the worst. I would get blasted and then I would obstinately resist everyone’s help, just to be a cunt. I wanted people to feel what I felt, even if just for a few minutes. Those minutes turned into a near decade. I’m done feeling sorry for myself. Done. I’m taking back agency of my life. I’m handling every interaction with my insurance company. I’m in coordination with every doctor. I’m cutting back on medication. I’m going back to physical therapy. I’m getting back in shape. I’m eating healthy. And I will be wealthy very soon. There’s no doubt in my mind. At the very least, I’m starting to laugh again. I’m starting to appreciate everyone and everything in my life. I’ve been injured since 2017, almost nine long years. Practically all of that time I spent wallowing in self-pity. “Woe to be me,” and all that. I let the pain I was in dictate every single decision I made. I was angry, and I fought with my friends for any and every reason. I’m honestly shocked that they tried as hard as they did to help me. I definitely didn’t deserve it. In the end I lost them, but I still love them and I’ll keep reaching out. The four months after my injury was the angriest I’ve ever been in my life. I would get drunk and stoned, and say the most awful, mean shit to the people that loved me and were just trying to help. The first 3 to 4 years of my injury was the worst. I would get blasted and then I would obstinately resist everyone’s help, just to be a cunt. I wanted people to feel what I felt, even if just for a few minutes. Those minutes turned into a near decade. I’m done feeling sorry for myself. Done. I’m taking back agency of my life. I’m handling every interaction with my insurance company. I’m in coordination with every doctor. I’m cutting back on medication. I’m going back to physical therapy. I’m getting back in shape. I’m eating healthy. And I will be wealthy very soon. There’s no doubt in my mind. At the very least, I’m starting to laugh again. I’m starting to appreciate everyone and everything in my life. This Veteran was driving into town. He noticed a funeral procession and pulled over. He noticed on the back of the hearse there was a USMC sticker, so he got out and stood at attention and saluted. “And as I did that, cars behind me started to honk. And they weren’t happy. I kept that salute through the honking and people scooting by…. I don’t know what kind of world we live in anymore and I don’t know if I’m created for a world that doesn’t exist anymore….So the question is, did I do what was right? Or am I just an echo from a long bygone era?” I salute you brother! You were taught and raised well, raised with respect. People don’t even pull over anymore. Not sure if they were taught to do so or they are all just in a dang big hurry like the rest of the world is to get where they need to be.
