Historically, unpopular wars have always roiled the Democratic Party — and shaken up the party leadership. The Vietnam War gave the Democratic Party an anti-war nominee named George McGovern— and pulled into politics two anti-war activists named Bill and Hillary Clinton. Opponents of the Iraq War elevated Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in 2008. And the same pattern is playing out right now with Gaza War and other conflicts in the Middle East; that carnage has opened the door for socialist candidates to win in New York and Colorado. Younger voters in particular are watching their phones, drawing a moral line and voting for the candidates who agree with them. Understanding that history doesn't tell you how to feel about the DSA or its candidates. It does show us that aspects of their rise are not unprecedented.

Buttigieg: Usually you're trying to fight those kinds of price effects that consumers are facing, not doing what the Trump administration is doing, which is actively causing them. Vladimir Putin launched a war. The result was that there were supply shocks and oil went up, and then we all did everything that we could in the administration, and all of us as Americans, did what we could to deal with that. Here you have a very different situation. The president launched a war of choice, and now we're all dealing with the consequences and the people who are paying the heaviest price, of course, are the service members, many of whom have given their lives, over 200 have reportedly been injured. But also every American is paying the price. Mortgage rates are going up because of this war. Grocery prices are going to go up because of this war. And of course, the price of gas is already way up because of Donald Trump's war.

In 2024, I joined the majority of voters in America and registered as an independent. I had always been an independent. Despite the "D" I had by my name, West Virginians knew I would always vote in the best interests of my state, not a political party. More and more people feel like neither of the two major political parties are in tune with the issues that everyday Americans are facing. The parties continue to reward bad behavior and lead from the extremes — even though Americans are asking for sensible leadership. I'm proud of the work that Americans Together is doing to identify the ways the two parties are taking choices away from voters — and how we can take power back. When Republicans don't vociferously condemn actual racism in professional group chats, they are throwing that choice back in people's faces. Sorry but you can't win elections with the edgelord constituency! The GOP needs to have its William F. Buckley moment and that moment is now.
