Another reason might be the availability of women in these tribes. These are extremely rigid tribes who never wanted to get mixed. So that can be a reason too. PS: I also heard or saw similar practices but currently can't remember. Maybe nepal too has a similar thing.

It's obviously not a prevalent practice in India but some regions in Himalayas and some tribe in south has this form of marriage..but with modern times I don't think it's as common now as it was few decades back

Yes in Tibal culture in Himalaya where land was rare asset and societies wanted not to split it! But this is different than case of Mahabharata . Mahabharatas has its own reasons documented for Polyandry of Draupadi and it was one off and not a practice or custom

It was done in olden times in Himachal...to prevent further division of land..now not so prevalent,in fact may have just died out...since people more educated!!

Polyandry was prevalent in Kinnaur, Lahul-spiti and interior parts of Chamba. Inherited from Pandvas & its legacy of original tribal culture of the area to ensure non-fragmentation of land holding. Many other marriage custom in Himachal like Jhanjrara,Jhindphuk & Darosh as well.
