I always saw it as Daemon reminding Vermithor that not every human comes with chains or commands.

He was getting Vermithor ready for the war and a new rider for the Dance

The Old King Jahearys used to sing this song to Vermithor all the time.. this is Daemon being Daemon as he was really the last true Dragon Lord, also getting Vermithor used to more than just the Dragon keepers again.. he knew it was only a matter of time before he'd be needed.

It was mainly to calm and reconnect with Vermithor, not to claim him. Such a brilliant scene.

This was simply to show that other dragons were living in Dragonstone and foreshadowing their appearance in season 2. It also showed the relationship of Targaryens with dragons - they don’t necessarily need to mount every dragon to approach them (i.e Jon ‘petting’ Drogon in GOT)

A lot of people theorize it’s a subtle lore drop. The lore being that, if you really read the lyrics, they imply what some fans have theorized for a long time which is that the Valyrians tamed dragons via blood magic. The idea being that they sacrifice someone to the dragon whose soul then winds up inside the dragon and that person, if they’re related to the dragon rider that bonds with the dragon, basically links that dragon and its future lineage to that particular human lineage. The three heads in the song basically being the rider, the dragon and the soul of the rider’s kin. This is why fans figure anyone who blows a dragon horn, like the one Euron has, dies and burns up. It’s symbolic. They die, burn up their mortal coil, but rise again in soul within a dragon. Phoenix symbolism. In this scene the idea seems to be that he’s preparing Vermithor for his upcoming bonding. The song is a sort of affirmation of that ancient blood bond between the Targaryens and Vermithor’s dragon lineage. This theory also helps explain why only people with Targaryen blood can ride their dragons. There’s also a theory that a dragon called “The Cannibal” in the F&B book (scrapped in the show) might be from a different Valyrian lineage which is why no Targaryen or Dragonseed seems able to claim him in his entire known history. He’s odd because the small folk of Dragonstone claim he was on the island before the Targaryens and their dragons. He also displays the unique and strange practice of eating Targaryen dragon eggs and smaller Targaryen dragons, hence his name. Finally, he weirdly appears during Corlys’ funeral and hovers over it almost like he’s mourning him. Fans basically theorize that The Cannibal is blood magic linked to the Velaryons from a time long past when they may have once been Dragon Lords like the Targaryens. His being unridden by Targaryens further lending credence to this idea that once a dragon is blood magic linked to a lineage it won’t let anyone outside of said lineage mount it.

It felt less like taming a dragon and more like speaking an ancient language only they both remembered. A moment of mutual recognition, not ownership

I interpret it as him making sure Vermithor is still there. He is the first one to bring up the unclaimed dragons on Dragonstone
