Anyone remember when Nicholas Hoult was cast in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning as “Gabriel” but then dropped out in pre-production but they still managed to squeeze in his pre-production photos into the Final Reckoning and he ended up NOT being Gabriel but rather a Young Ethan Hunt.

He was supposed to play him in those flashback sequences?

Yep and it starts making sense when you watch Dead Reckoning because they completely drop that aspect of the story and never answer or explain how Ethan and Gabriel knew each other and how/why Ethan was set up.

But same way Andrew Garfield/Tobey wasnt in Spiderman Marilon Cotillard was NOT playing Talia Al Ghul The same way they won’t officially announce who Sebastian Stan is playing in The Batman 2 Or How Adria Arjona is “Maxima” Not everything you read is true and often times is speculative

Not true. Hoult was meant to play Gabriel, those pictures are of Tom Cruise. He was certainly never going to play a young version of Ethan.

I worked on Final Reckoning for 3 years (including the reshoots for Dead Reckoning). The first picture is a young Tom Cruise, the second is edited but still TC. Neither picture is Hoult.

I don't know if you remember but McQuarrie did say that for Dead Reckoning they were planning a sequence with a de aged Tom Cruise that was probably the evolution of Hoult's role before they scrapped it all together

Agreed. I think after Hoult dropped out they were gonna de-age Cruise then realized the budget would go into the stratosphere and the whole Gabriel/Ethan set up/connection was completely dropped in Final Reckoning.

And yet McQ said repeatedly they didn't like the deaging and scrapped the sequence. Why have deaging if they've got an actor? It makes more sense that Hoult was a young Gabriel in the present and the flashback was done AFTER Gabriel was recast to try and tie him to Ethan's past
