Yesterday, 50 years ago, I was forced to leave everything I had ever known behind. In the dark haze of the morning, my family and I fled as everything around us crumbled. Saigon had fallen, and so had the lives my family had built for us. Fortunate to be embraced by American kindness and opportunity, I earned my place as an American and Texan. I'm going to remember this the next time I feel blackpilled. This Memorial Day, a tweet went viral from SharrellAnne, who lost her husband, Army Staff Sergeant Alan W. Shaw, in 2007. She asked for someone to take a picture of her husband's grave in Arlington National Cemetery. The flood of responses she got was a much-needed reminder that good still exists in the world. As we mourn Terry, my thoughts also turn to J.M., a man who dedicated his life to justice, equality, and the dignity of every Kenyan.
