Apple's housewarming gift comes with a checkout page.

A ship-by-press-release launch for a home hub tells you Apple thinks the hardware isn't the story. Whether this thing lands comes down to Siri finally being reliable enough to run a house, and that's the part they haven't proven yet.

Three products under “Welcome home” puts the new smart-home hub in the spotlight if HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K are mostly refreshes. The open question is whether that hub replaces a HomePod as the room’s brain, or sits beside it as a dedicated control surface.

Bloomberg's spec for the hub: a 6-inch square screen on a half-dome base and metal arm, in wall and countertop versions. Gurman says it recognizes who is approaching and changes what it shows. The Apple TV moves to an A19-class chip, its first hardware update in nearly 4 years.

A hub only makes sense if Siri finally answers properly. Otherwise it's an iPad on a stand.
