The paper has a provocative title but I find this ancient take on Human thinking more provocative: Plato’s Allegory of the Cave (Ancient Greece, ~380 BCE) In The Republic, Plato describes prisoners chained in a dark cave, seeing only shadows projected on a wall, mistaking them for reality. The allegory illustrates how human perceptions and beliefs (narratives) are often mere reflections of a deeper truth, which requires philosophical insight to uncover. The prisoners’ “thinking” is an illusion shaped by limited sensory input, not absolute truth. Zhuangzi’s Butterfly Dream (China, ~4th century BCE) In the Zhuangzi, a foundational Daoist text, Zhuangzi recounts dreaming he was a butterfly, only to wake and question whether he is a man dreaming of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man. This story challenges the certainty of personal identity and perception, suggesting that our narratives about reality may be illusory and not grounded in absolute truth. Advaita Vedanta and the Upanishads (India, ~800–200 BCE) The Upanishads, ancient Hindu texts, and later Advaita Vedanta philosophy (articulated by Adi Shankaracharya, ~8th century CE) emphasize the concept of maya—the illusion of the material world and individual ego. They argue that our thoughts and narratives about reality are deceptive, veiling the ultimate truth of Brahman, the singular, unchanging reality. The Chandogya Upanishad (6.8.7) famously states, “Tat Tvam Asi” (“Thou art That”), pointing to the unity of self and ultimate reality beyond illusory distinctions. Buddhist Teachings on Emptiness (India, ~5th century BCE onward) In early Buddhist texts like the Pali Canon and later in Mahayana Buddhism’s Heart Sutra, the concept of shunyata (emptiness) suggests that all phenomena, including thoughts and narratives, lack inherent existence. The Heart Sutra declares, “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form,” implying that our mental constructs and stories about reality are impermanent and not absolutely true. Nagarjuna’s Mulamadhyamakakarika (2nd century CE) further elaborates that all concepts are interdependent and empty of fixed truth. Heraclitus and the Flux Doctrine (Ancient Greece, ~500 BCE) The pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus taught that “you cannot step into the same river twice,” emphasizing the constant flux of reality. He suggested that human narratives and fixed beliefs are illusory because they attempt to impose permanence on an ever-changing world, misaligning with the dynamic nature of truth.
