AI has an image problem. It's one of the most significant technological shifts in the last century. Despite this, there is widespread fear around the societal and planetary impacts of AI. At Patch, we fundamentally believe AI is a technology that can be used for good. Medicine, energy, climate action all have obvious applications for LLMs. The most obvious? Removing the friction that comes with coordination of large scale programs. We've lost millions (billions?) of iteration cycles because of large groups of people struggle to get organized. If you want to help drive better outcomes and up the ambition for energy and carbon programs, we're hiring in SF and London.

New short course on Serverless LLM apps with Amazon Bedrock, taught by Amazon Web Services' Mike G Chambers! A serverless architecture enables you to quickly deploy your applications without needing to set up and manage compute servers to run your applications on, the maintenance of which can be another full-time job. In this course, you’ll learn how to do this by using an event-driven architecture to build complex AI workflows. Mike illustrate these concepts by building a cool application that automatically detects incoming customer inquiries, transcribes them with ASR (automatic speech recognition), summarizes them with an LLM using Bedrock, and deploys serverless with AWS Lambda. I hope this course makes it much easier for you to build and deploy LLM applications requiring multi-step AI workflows. Please sign up here:

NEW - John Kerry Says Not One Democratically Elected Politician Can Stop the Climate Agenda "If you wound up with a different President who was opposed to climate crisis, I got news for you. No one politician anywhere in the world can undo what is happening now...The only issue for all of us is not whether or not we can get or will get to a low carbon, no carbon economy globally. We will. The only question is, will we get there in time to meet the challenge of the scientists in order to avoid the worst consequences of this crisis. That is what is at stake."

Bill Gates is betting millions on a bizarre climate "fix": cutting down trees… and burying them. Kadama Systems—backed by Gates’ Breakthrough Energy—raised $6.6M to chop forests, bury the wood, and sell it as carbon offsets. The US Forest Service plans to thin 70 million acres (mostly in California), removing 1+ billion tons of biomass. Instead of using it for lumber, they’ll lock it underground. Traditional use: Trees → lumber → homes New model: Trees → buried → carbon credits Does this actually fight climate change… or just enrich carbon traders?

"Climate always changes. What would concern me is if climate didn't change. Then we would have a climate catastrophe." Geologist Prof. Ian Plimer: "Climates are cyclical... When we're closer to the Sun, we happen to be a bit warmer, and when we're further away, we happen to be a bit cooler... The Sun puts out variable amounts of energy... And these are the two drivers of climate: the amount of energy that's put out by the Sun, and how close we are to the Sun." "For more than 80% of time, the planet has been warmer and wetter than now. For more than 80% of time, sea levels have been higher than now." "We've had eight major ice ages, and each one of these ice ages started when we had more carbon dioxide in the air than now. So how could carbon dioxide drive warming?" "So as soon as this idea of human-induced climate change appeared, we geologists thought: No, that doesn't fit in with hundreds of years of data. This sounds like a con."

The nexus between climate change and militarism is undeniable. The U.S. military's vast carbon footprint and consumption of fossil fuels exacerbate the climate crisis. We must redirect our resources from the machinery of bellicose empire building to the creation of a just society that prioritizes sustainable livelihoods - jobs, housing, healthcare, education. It's time to demilitarize our economy and build a commitment to peace and planet Join us in the fight for truth, [climate] justice and love.
