Appollo was 9 years old when he and his handler reached Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. He worked through smoke, rubble, fire, and dangerous conditions searching for those who needed to be found. His coat was singed and his paws became bruised and cracked, but Appollo kept wanting... to work. He refused to simply give up and walk away from the job he had been trained to do. Eventually, his handler, NYPD Officer Peter Davis, had to make the decision to stop him and give his exhausted body the rest that Appollo himself wasn't willing to take. That was the heart of a working dog. Loyalty. Courage. Determination. And an incredible drive to keep going when others needed him. Appollo later received the PDSA Dickin Medal, representing the search and rescue dogs who served at Ground Zero and the Pentagon. He passed away in November 2006 at the age of 14, but the courage he showed on September 11 will never be forgotten. Some heroes wear a uniform. Some wear a collar. Appollo was one of them. The vet had been honest with the Hollands. Baxter didn't have much time left, and the kindest thing they could do now was make whatever he had left count. So on a warm Saturday in June , instead of a normal quiet day at home, they loaded the old Bernese into the back of the van and drove him two hours to the coast. Baxter had never seen the ocean. He was 13, and his whole life had been the backyard and the same worn spot on the living room rug. The kids wanted him to see something big before he went. He moved slow getting out of the van. His back legs weren't what they used to be, and the boys had to help him down onto the sand. For a second he just stood there at the top of the beach, nose up, taking in all that salt air and open water like he couldn't quite believe it. Then something in him shifted. He started down toward the surf on his own, stiff and determined, the way he used to trot to the door when the kids came home from school. When the first cold wave washed over his paws, his whole face lit up. He didn't run, he couldn't, but he waded in up to his chest and stood in the shallow water with the sun going down behind him, and the whole family just watched. Nobody said much. They didn't need to. They stayed until the light was almost gone, taking pictures, letting Baxter rest against their legs, giving him one perfect afternoon to hold onto. Tamale Mirundi was the kind of man you would dislike, and at the same time look forward to listening to. He had many contradictions, swinging from one position to another and back. But wherever he stood at a time, he had that gift of the gab to make you feel like he had some point. He laboured to analyse. Much of his analysis was sophistic, and often opportunistic. But you had to be keen to notice the fallacies therein, otherwise you would get carried away by the entertainment in his way with words, metaphors, and fitting examples that were always available to him. Much as his books (pamphlets) were dismissed by many in view of the speed at which they were released, they manifest a desire to reflect and document. He prided in his arrogance. But it was usually an entertaining arrogance, easy to let pass. Towards the end of his life, his vocabulary became more and more unhinged, requiring Parental Guidance. Could the liberty of his tongue have been Dutch courage? As a propagandist, sometimes he sounded far fetched in his conspiracy theories, but his quality was often a bit higher than the new herd of bonehead propagandists deployed by his political club on social media. Many of them are characteristically unimaginative, belly-brained, predictable, petty, and, in summary, stupid. You can detect them from their first sentence. One of the features of philosophical minds is the freedom to think beyond conventions, venturing into taboo topics, pushing boundaries of what is acceptable, and questioning common sense. Much of this he did. He questioned religious beliefs and cultural norms. He lived the way of his mind. In many ways, including when he went off limits of social decency and civility, he was his own man. He dared to use his brain. He hasn’t returned it to the creator intact. May he find rest.

As a propagandist, sometimes he sounded far fetched in his conspiracy theories, but his quality was often a bit higher than the new herd of bonehead propagandists deployed by his political club on social media. Many of them are characteristically unimaginative, belly-brained, predictable, petty, and, in summary, stupid. You can detect them from their first sentence. One of the features of philosophical minds is the freedom to think beyond conventions, venturing into taboo topics, pushing boundaries of what is acceptable, and questioning common sense. Much of this he did. He questioned religious beliefs and cultural norms. He lived the way of his mind. In many ways, including when he went off limits of social decency and civility, he was his own man. He dared to use his brain. He hasn’t returned it to the creator intact. May he find rest.

In 1944, a 14-year-old Black boy named George Stinney was arrested in South Carolina. He was falsely accused of killing two white girls without a single piece of solid evidence, simply because he was the last person seen with them. He wasn't allowed to see his family, was interrogated without a lawyer, and "confessed" under pressure and fear. His trial lasted only a few hours with an all-white jury. Just 81 days after his arrest, he was executed in the electric chair. He was so small that his feet didn't reach the floor, so they had to place a Bible under him to make the straps fit. The most shocking part: he was innocent. In 2014, seventy years later, a court officially overturned the conviction and declared him innocent. But George never came back.
