On this day in 1985, the first and only studio album by The Family was released on Paisley Park Records. One of Prince's many supergroups, The Family was made up of St. Paul, Susannah Melvoin, Miko Weaver, Jellybean Johnson, Eric Leeds, Allen Flowers, and Jerome Benton. The Family's self-titled album inlcuded the first ever recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U" heard by the public. Prince later released his own live version of "Nothing Compares 2 U" in 1993 as a duet with Rosie Gaines from the New Power Generation.

The release, which included tracks like "Call My Name," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Life 'O' The Party," was given to concert goers who attended the performances, while the physical retail version was available in the UK on April 19th, and in the US on April 20th. "Musicology is all about music the way it used to be and it’s about getting the music to the people. That’s why everyone who comes to the show gets a copy of the record.
