Gas stations only have 87 and 91 octane tanks in the ground. There is a blending valve in the pump that mixes 87 and 91 to create 89.

If you have a high compression engine designed for 91 octane (like a turbo), i do not recommend putting 87 into the engine. It will run but you run the risk of knocking (pre-ignition) at best the engine will retard timing/power.
