Henry Nowak was 18 - a kind and hard-working student with his life ahead of him. His murder – at the hands of Vickrum Digwa - was a horrifying and evil act. Digwa murdered Henry and then lied about him, as he lay dying - falsely accusing him of racism. The Nowak family deserve answers about what happened on that night, particularly in the police response. Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) will be equipped with the resources, authority and independence it needs to conduct a full, fearless and transparent investigation. They must find the truth and ensure, if necessary, that there are consequences. It is also clear that we must take action to tackle the daily tragedy of knife crime. Progress has been made, with knife crime now falling, but we must go further. That is why I have recently published this Government's Halving Knife Crime Plan. We must be clear about who is responsible for this crime. The punishment must be reserved for those who are responsible for this evil act. We do not believe in collective punishment in this country. Instead, we stand together against an act of pure evil. We condemn those who committed this heinous crime. Not all those who share their faith or ethnicity. A final note. With further sentencing and possible charges pending, and misinformation already circulating, we must be cautious in what we say about this case so proceedings are not placed at risk. Those responsible must be brought to justice.

WE MUST STATE IT OPENLY: Messages like this “Albania for Albanians” and “No foreigner to replce Albanians” are pure racism and must have no place in the protest. Those who are hijacking the agenda and the demands of the protest must not be allowed to do it, with conspiracy theories against Jews and anti LGBTQI narratives. We must voice our concerns about those deeply problematic messages, this is not us the Albanians, we are not like the minority who has the microphones in the protest.

Of course they’re going to be anxious and feel insecure about what the future holds. And so I really think we need to stop and ask, “Who are we doing this for? What are the results we want? And how do we get there?” We get there by including workers in the process. They shouldn’t have to be at the end of the cycle. They should actually be upstream.

When we arrived at the protest happening at City Hall, two men wearing armbands approached us. One claimed to have “security clearances” to keep me from entering the protest, which was being held on public property. We asked if the police department gave him permission to do this, and he confirmed that he did not have clearance from the Philadelphia Police Department to stop me from entering. We then asked for his name and what organization he was acting on behalf of, but he refused to answer. As we entered the protest the two men became four. After one of the men invaded our personal space, we informed all four of them that what they were doing was unconstitutional and illegal. This seemed to make them uncomfortable. Unfortunately later in the protest, our phone and microphone was stolen by an ANTIFA agitator while we covered the demonstration further. With many violations of the law being documented at these events, our question is this: Should these protests be considered unlawful gatherings?

Security presence is heavy, with private BLEW security on site. A strong police force and mounted police. Protesters have since moved to Museum Square in front of the building. At least seven demonstrators involved have been arrested.
