Dear Rwandans, Dear Youth, “You are nothing. Idiots.” These are reportedly the words of Ignatius R. Kabagambe spokesperson of the University of Rwanda University of Rwanda when asked to delete tweets attacking a young woman who said she was “broke” and urged Government of Rwanda Ministry of Youth and Arts | Rwanda to address youth poverty. Instead of respecting her right to free expression, he publicly humiliated her, branding her an “enemy of the state”-a label with serious consequences. BBC News Africa reports indicate she later suffered psychological distress. In his defense, Kabagambe claimed that when the President speaks harshly, no one questions him, so he owes explanations to no one and only answers to Paul Kagame. The silence of Rwanda Investigation Bureau reinforces the perception that accountability in #Rwanda is selective. By his own admission, he listens only to the ruling party FPR-Inkotanyi, everyone else is irrelevant. Students and young people, including at the University of Rwanda University of Rwanda , are concerned for her safety and question whether someone who openly dismisses rights should represent an institution tasked with teaching ethics and civic responsibility. Kabagambe’s remarks were made during a space hosted by AKASAMUTWE highlighting a broader struggle over youth rights and free speech in Rwanda. S/c: Ignatius R. Sport brings us together and creates an opportunity to reach young people with life-saving health information. As highlighted in this video, through the 4th Intercamp Sports and Awareness Tournament, we used sport as a platform to promote HIV prevention, access to health services, mental health,SRH, substance-use prevention and informed decision-making among young people in Mahama Refugee Camp. Throughout the campaign, we encouraged young people to seek reliable health information, visit health facilities, make informed choices, and use condoms to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. We also distributed more than 100,000 condoms, helping young people access essential HIV and STI prevention tools. We made this initiative possible through collaboration with Ministry in charge of Emergency Management , UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency , Kirehe District , GIZ Rwanda , Save the Children Rwanda & Burundi ,AHF Rwanda and other partners. Beyond the game, we used sport to educate, empower and promote healthier choices among young people. For assistance or concerns, call RRP+ Toll-Free: 1245.
