The aircraft can be seen passing over one of the two Fearless-class LPDs involved in the landings, which is firing a Seacat SAM. It is unclear whether the missile is responsible for the recorded ‘kill’, as the Seacat had a poor performance record during the conflict. Off Port San Carlos, the British faced intense attacks from Argentine land-based aircraft, which repeatedly strafed Royal Navy ships. The ferocity of these raids earned San Carlos Water the nickname “Bomb Alley”. It was later regarded as a tactical miscalculation that Argentine pilots focused their efforts on the ships rather than the landing craft and troops; by 25 May, the British had already established a strong force of elite professionals on East Falkland, enabling them to retake Port Stanley roughly three weeks later. The Argentine pilots were widely praised for their courage during these attacks, in which they scored numerous hits on British vessels. The crewman says during a wave of missile launches, the Israelis had targeted a TEL (missile launcher) that was ready to shoot. On 28 May 1982, during the Battle of Goose Green, Nigel was killed while advancing with D Company after what appeared to be an Argentine surrender turned into a deadly burst of gunfire. 9 years ago today, Arsenal lost their first game in 4 months, as they lost 2-1 away at Everton; missing out on the chance to go top of the Premier League. Unfortunately, this one defeat spiralled into a 5 year decline, as Arsenal never recovered & narrowly finished outside of the top 4 for the first time in 21 years. Arsenal didn’t qualify for the Champions League for another 6 years during which, had 4 different managers & finished as low as 8th.

The genesis of the flag came from the British impressment of 6,000 sailors off American ships during the Napoleonic Wars. The US had previously fought wars for Freedom of the Seas against the Barbary States and France. We would go on and fight wars for Freedom of the Seas in two world wars and lead to American involvement in the Middle East with the Tanker War of 1987-88. I think President Trump fails to understand that we have historically fought pirates and should not emualte them. Pirates defy the rule of law. Hence, the US should ratify UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and set the standard on the world's oceans.

Tethered with steel cables these balloons floated as high as 5,000 feet snagging 231 doodlebugs ripping wings or detonating them early despite some V1s having cable cutters. They formed the last line of defense. 🫡

Two Soviet soldiers reunited in 1983, decades after the Second World War. These men fought side by side at Stalingrad, the bloodiest battle in human history. They saw the worst of the battle. Their platoon was assigned the defense of a strategic building in Stalingrad dubbed “Pavlov’s House”. They took their position on September 27th, 1942 with a force of about 40 men. They fought together in desperation against a nearly overwhelming German force. They were finally relieved of their position on November 25th, 1942, after nearly two months of holding the position; only 4 out of the original 40 had survived the siege.

Months of heatwaves have left the Danube River at a critically low level, revealing Nazi warships, ancient animal fossils and other relics of history. In Serbia, at least 20 German ships that were intentionally scuttled during the war can be seen from the banks of Prahovo, a village located on the river. While some of the ships had been previously removed by the Communist Yugoslav authorities, many remained due to the dangerous explosives onboard. And in Bulgaria, some residents discovered the bones of a woolly mammoth. The animals coexisted with ancient humans and were hunted for food, tusks and bones before they went extinct.
