I was encouraged to accept an apology from a friend of the RA and move on. Let me be clear: no Black student in this building feels safe right now. This did not happen off campus. It did not happen online. It happened in university housing, immediately after an RA meeting, and involved private details of my housing situation being shared. The response I received minimized the harm and shifted concern toward the comfort of those involved rather than the safety of Black students. Calling me a racial slur is not a misunderstanding. It is harassment. Treating it as something to be apologized away sends a message about whose safety matters. Happy Black History Month. Parents & Students are upset about what took place between a student & representatives at Arkansas State University One student wrote I just got off the phone with the Chancellor’s office at Arkansas State University regarding what’s been happening on campus. It is extremely disappointing and unacceptable that representatives from Turning Point USA are reportedly on campus making derogatory and racist remarks toward Black individuals—using terms like “ghetto,” “dusty,” and “ashy.” That kind of language is harmful, disrespectful, and creates a hostile environment for students. Yes, A-State is a public university, and I understand that under the First Amendment, even offensive speech can be protected. Court rulings like Brandenburg v. Ohio make it clear that speech is protected unless it incites imminent violence or is a direct threat. But let’s be clear just because something is legally protected does NOT make it right. Universities still have a responsibility to ensure their students feel safe, respected, and supported. Speech that targets and degrades people based on race can contribute to a hostile and discriminatory environment, and that should never be ignored. This is bigger than “free speech.” This is about dignity. This is about respect. This is about protecting ALL students. I am calling on Arkansas State University to take this seriously, review the situation, enforce their policies, and stand firm in their commitment to an inclusive campus. Federal authorities arrested a doctoral student from Turkey studying at Tufts University in Massachusetts earlier this week shortly after she departed from her off-campus home. Rumeysa Ozturk, 30, had a valid F-1 student visa, according to her attorney. In 1975, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing was fired from Howard University over her views expressed within The Cress Theory of Color Confrontation, which silenced a block of her academic influence. While Howard University is a historically Black university, it was the power dynamic of White supremacy that drove the decision to remove Dr. Welsing’s influence on the Black student body. RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR ALLEGEDLY PERSECUTES CHRISTIAN PG STUDENT We received an SOS in our DM from a student from RSU. According to accounts provided by the student of Rivers State University, an incident allegedly occurred on campus yesterday involving a postgraduate student and a senior lecturer. He reports that a PG student, who is a former President of the Postgraduate Christian Fellowship, entered a Year 1 Computer Engineering class during a free period to give a brief Christian/motivational talk. The student alleges that a lecturer identified as Prof. Benjamin Senibo Pepple from the Department of Physics and a former DVC entered the room during the talk and aggressively confronted the PG student. Witnesses claim that the lecturer allegedly slapped the student several times, pulled his shirt, and verbally harassed him before contacting the CSO. The PG student was allegedly detained by campus security from morning until night and is now reported to be in poor health. Students further allege that similar incidents involving Christian student leaders have happened before and are calling on the RSU leadership, state authorities, and the public to intervene. They are requesting an independent investigation to confirm what occurred and to ensure the safety and rights of all students. The student has been released but may soon be redetained, according to what the CSO allegedly said upon his release. Below are videos to the effect:
