NEW: 18 Army Rangers have reportedly been suspended for firing off blanks during the Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival off Crab Island in Florida. Boaters and swimmers reportedly took cover at the sound of gunshots. “As part of Friday night’s festival schedule, soldiers from the 6th Ranger Training Battalion at Camp Rudder were to engage in a mock ‘sea battle’ with Billy Bowlegs as his boat approached the Fort Walton Beach Landing. This ‘battle’ involved the soldiers firing blanks from their weapons,” the city said. “The Army is aware of the incident that occurred at Crab Island,” said public affairs director at the Maneuver Center of Excellence & Fort Benning. “We take this situation seriously and are investigating. The Army will ensure accountability based on the outcome.” It’s unclear what exactly prompted the incident.

Some stories about honoring our service members are national. Some are deeply personal, like this one. Charles Albert Walker, IV was my daughter’s husband and the father of my first grandchild. On May 19, 2019, he lost his battle with service related PTSD. The story of his final months and the impact his absence has had on his children deserves its own space. For now, I want to focus on his service and the ultimate sacrifice he made for our freedoms. He served with the 2D Combat Engineer Battalion, 2D Marine Division. Al Qaim, Iraq – 2006 Ramadi, Iraq – 2007 Bagram, Afghanistan – 2011 Meritoriously promoted, Charles earned the rank of Staff Sergeant in just nine years, a testament to his leadership, discipline, and dedication to the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Combat Engineer, later as a Military Police officer on the Special Reaction Team (the USMC’s version of SWAT), before becoming a recruiter, where he continued to shape and influence the lives of future Marines. Beyond his service, Charles was a lover of travel and adventure. He sang in the church choir, worked with the youth, and found meaning in reading and writing. He was an outdoor enthusiast, an extremely hard worker, and a man who gave his best in everything he did. Above all else, Charles was an incredible father. If you know a service member or veteran, please reach out. Call them. Text them. Ask them about their memories, their experiences, and their lives. Sometimes simply being seen, heard, and remembered can be life saving.

Richard Gere explains why "Babette’s Feast" (1987) is one of his favourite movies: "One of my all-time favorites is 'Babette’s Feast' (1987). It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why. It’s very pure. It’s not tricky at all; the filmmaking is almost invisible. I think for the most part, it feels like there are non-actors in the piece — although I’m sure they’re actors — but it’s not an actor-y piece at all. It’s just beautifully conceived with a really generous heart at its center. It just really moves me, I saw it again last week. It holds up; it’s the purity and the simplicity of it. And the sentiment of community and excellence. The idea of excellence and generosity as real things. Something, obviously, that’s in danger these days. The idea of truth and excellence and compassion. And kind of a willingness to accept the other. Forgive. So I think it’s a really deep, timeless film." David Chalmers on why consciousness is science's greatest unsolved problem: Science has mapped subatomic particles, distant stars, the chemistry of life yet it remains almost completely silent on the one thing we know most directly: our own conscious experience. In a rare early interview, philosopher David Chalmers explains why: "Consciousness is at once the most familiar thing in the world and the most mysterious. Consciousness is what we start with when it comes to knowing the world. I know that I exist. I know that I'm conscious. Everything else is secondary." And yet, despite this intimacy, consciousness sticks out like a sore thumb in the scientific picture. Chalmers points to a deep irony: science has made extraordinary progress on phenomena that are extraordinarily remote: subatomic particles, distant galaxies, the molecular machinery of biology while making almost no progress on the one thing closest to us. Why? Because science, by design, eliminates the subjective. "To do proper science, you have to be objective. You have to eliminate anything subjective from the picture." He uses heat as the perfect example. Physics gives us a complete account of heat molecules in motion, energy transfer, temperature gradients. It explains every objective aspect of the phenomenon. But it never explains what hotness actually feels like. "Science doesn't actually give a theory of the conscious feeling of hotness." This is what Chalmers calls the Hard Problem of Consciousness. You can trace every neural signal from your heat sensor along your nerves into your brain and still have explained nothing about the subjective experience of feeling warm. As interviewer Jeffrey Mishlove puts it: you can't even do science without a conscious mind to observe, interpret, and make meaning of data. Consciousness is the precondition for science itself and yet science has no framework to account for it. Chalmers' conclusion is striking: The methods of science may need to be expanded. Consciousness might not be something science explains away. It might be something science has to learn to start with.

GALLAGHER: "Here's one of the great misconceptions about the Civil War. Among the people who know anything about it, which in the U.S. is a very small percentage, but if they know anything, they know United States victory was inevitable because the United States had 22 million people. The Confederacy had five and a half million white people and three and a half million enslaved people. The United States economy was infinitely more powerful than the Confederate economy. The United States had the United States Army. The United States had the United States Navy. Really? Who's going to win this war? The U.S. It's inevitable. Next question. It's not true at all." "The U.S. did have those advantages, but the Confederacy had compensating advantages. And one of those advantages was it had a much lower bar to cross for success. It didn't have to invade the United States, didn't have to capture Washington. It didn't have to project its military power into New England. All it had to do was convince a majority of the civilian population of the loyal states that it wasn't worth the cost to make these rebel states come back into the union. These are two democratic republics at war. And in the end, the civilian sector decides." "Somebody my age can, we have the perfect example, Vietnam. To me, the conditions for victory are the most important factor that favors the Confederacy. We just have to make it painful enough to the United States that they're going to say, let them go. And we don't have to worry about slavery in the territories if they're gone, because they'll be gone and our territories will be free of slavery."

Among the people who know anything about it, which in the U.S. is a very small percentage, but if they know anything, they know United States victory was inevitable because the United States had 22 million people. The Confederacy had five and a half million white people and three and a half million enslaved people. The United States economy was infinitely more powerful than the Confederate economy. The United States had the United States Army. The United States had the United States Navy. Really? Who's going to win this war? The U.S. It's inevitable. Next question. It's not true at all." "The U.S. did have those advantages, but the Confederacy had compensating advantages. And one of those advantages was it had a much lower bar to cross for success. It didn't have to invade the United States, didn't have to capture Washington. It didn't have to project its military power into New England. All it had to do was convince a majority of the civilian population of the loyal states that it wasn't worth the cost to make these rebel states come back into the union. These are two democratic republics at war. And in the end, the civilian sector decides." "Somebody my age can, we have the perfect example, Vietnam. The United States was not defeated militarily in Vietnam and it didn't matter because when the people said, we're not going to support this war anymore, the war is going to come to an end. The smart people in the Confederacy understood this. They understood it at the time. Lee understood it. Jefferson Davis understood it. You had key people at the time saying there is no way that a nation as large as ours and a population as large as ours has ever been subjected in a war like this. A tie is as good as a win for the Confederacy. And they came very close to that in the summer of 1864." "The other thing is the sheer size of the Confederacy is a huge advantage to them. It's huge with a very poor transportation and communication infrastructure in many ways, and to move a large army deep into the Confederacy is a huge logistical problem. The same thing had happened to the British, both during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. They confront this; the Confederacy is as big as all of Western Europe. That's a problem. It's also a problem that the Confederates are fighting, literally fighting to defend their homes. That's almost always a stronger factor than trying to impose your will on somebody else. All of these factors helped the Confederacy." "The U.S. did have an army. The army had 15,000 men in it in 1860, 15,000. The Navy had fewer than 50 vessels. Most of them on overseas stations, there were exactly three vessels available to blockade the Confederacy at the beginning of the war. Confederate coastline is 3,600 miles long. Probably not going to be able to shut down a lot there. So the point is that there are factors that help both sides. To me, the conditions for victory are the most important factor that favors the Confederacy. We just have to make it painful enough to the United States that they're going to say, let them go. We never liked South Carolina anyway. Just let them go. We're not, it's not worth it. It's killing too many of our boys. It's costing too much money. And we don't have to worry about slavery in the territories if they're gone, because they'll be gone and our territories will be free of slavery."

I posted a few weeks ago what happened to me last time I was trying to have a session at the local cemetery. I wasn’t getting many voices that time however I kept having equipment malfunctions and the fresh batteries were absolutely drained. It was almost if they didn’t want to be heard. This young lady was having a spirit box session at her local cemetery, and getting many responses, some of which scared her. She was fine up until one of them said her name. I’ve always believed that they are always present and just can’t be seen. They get to know us and our names and such, it’s kind of eerie knowing or feeling like I am being watched at all times. There are people who believe the voices are real but feel it has to be a negative entity pretending to be a person. I can say that I have no explanation for this. However when running the spirit box in reverse it’s hard to ignore when I get full sentences to my question. I’ve always felt that since we are made of energy and energy never dissipates, I think the essence or spirit of a person can linger, and that explains the voices or things moving and hauntings. I would love to hear your explanation to what these are or whether you believe in it or not. For the time being I do believe they are spirits, however I am clueless as to why they would be hanging around a cemetery as if stuck in limbo.

We have all come across a lot of ridiculous attempts to justify the European colonisation of Africa, from the lie that colonisers helped civilise the continent to exaggerated claims that they increased life expectancy via Western medicine. But, just when you think it can’t get any more absurd, it does. For instance, Eric Louw, a South African-born former journalist and academic, now based in Australia, claims Europeans did not steal land from Black people in his country of birth because the Bantu people, who make up the majority of Africa’s Black people, are ‘not indigenous’ to it. Louw’s claims are the work of a myth that has circulated in South Africa’s right-wing circles since the 19th century. The so-called ‘Vacant Land’ theory asserts that European settlers arrived in what is now South Africa almost at the same time as Africans, who were (per the theory) still migrating from central Africa at that point. Therefore, according to these right-wingers, the two groups have equal claim to South Africa’s land. This theory was also used by the apartheid regime to grab land from Black people, insisting that it didn’t belong to them in the first place. However, archaeological and historical evidence debunks such claims. For instance, artefacts discovered at the Mapungumbwe heritage site in the country’s north show that Bantu societies existed in South Africa as far back as the 9th century.
