I'm gonna go ahead and release this here, as there seems to be some discourse since it was not well documented, as Ben McHone and I were the only chasers with a view of the Kankakee, IL Tornado as it morphed from a stout stovepipe to a large wedge. We were northbound on a road, looking south of the tornado, while most high-profile chasers were to the SW of the tornado at the time. This tornado turned into a rapidly widening tornado and was cloaked by RFD, moving directly into Aroma Park. This tornado spooked me to a degree as I was anticipating it to be moving more NE vs due East. Otherwise, this would have been a very close-range intercept. After this, the tornado became wrapped from our view before blasting east. I'll release a video of the Satellite with an evil El Reno-like Meso here later.

🌪️ May 28, 2019. I think about this day often each spring. A mile-wide EF-4 tornado, with estimated peak winds of 170 mph, cut a 32-mile path across Douglas and Leavenworth counties in Kansas. We tracked this mostly rain-wrapped violent tornado from a safe distance along K-10 in StormTracker9 as it approached the western side of the Kansas City metro. The tornado dissipated near Bonner Springs, KS, but the parent supercell thunderstorm cycled and produced a separate EF-2 tornado near Kearney, MO. Miraculously, there were no fatalities, but 18 people were injured, and numerous homes and businesses were heavily damaged or destroyed. What do you remember from this day?

On May 27, 1997, a violent F5 tornado struck the small town of Jarrell, Texas, leaving devastation so complete that entire neighborhoods were erased from the map. Spawned by an unusual weather pattern that allowed storms to move southwest instead of the typical northeast, the Jarrell tornado developed slowly, growing into a massive, slow-moving wedge. It tore through the Double Creek Estates subdivision at only 10-15 mph, giving it more time to grind away at structures. Several individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital by ambulance. All victims were alive at the scene.
