A volatile stretch of weather is setting up tonight across a large part of the country from southern Michigan through Indiana and Illinois, and south into Texas. Here in northwest Indiana, including Crown Point, conditions are lining up for all modes of severe weather. The Weather Channel measures severe weather potential using our TOR:CON (Tornado Condition Index) and tonight the value here is 7 out of 10, meaning tornadoes are likely within 50 miles of a given location if storms develop. What’s possible with these storms: • Tornadoes, potentially strong (EF2–EF3+) • Large hail up to 2 inches in diameter • Damaging straight-line winds Another concern: timing. Many of these storms will move through in the middle of the night. Nighttime tornadoes are especially dangerous because they’re hard to see, often rain-wrapped, and most people are asleep when warnings are issued.
