The Left says they care about freedom of religion. No they don’t. If a right-wing streamer stormed a synagogue or a mosque it would be their new January 6th. The left says arresting Don Lemon is an attack on free speech. But they arrested meme makers for memes. They arrested Trump for tweets. The left says arresting Don Lemon is an attack on journalism! But they don’t care when Nick Shirley, James Okeefe, Nick Sortor, Cam Higby and so many other journalists are physically attacked and beaten. This is the playbook that dictators use to destroy democracies and take the will of the people away. It is as simple as that. Watch that video. He is covering the protest. That is what journalists do. I covered riots. I was a local reporter in Los Angeles for 15 years, and I covered riots and floods and earthquakes and all sorts of things where I had to step into areas where there were police, where there was activity, private property. When you're covering an event like this, like a protest, which I have covered many, you step into it. That's what journalists do. And that's what Don Lemon did. It is insane that they are making this stupid argument. This is a ridiculous assault, and I don't want to say just on the First Amendment. It's a ridiculous assault on democracy. The Trump administration should be ashamed of itself, but they're not. And they will continue to do this. And they are going after journalists. They're getting search warrants for their homes. But Maher’s firm opposition to the arrest quickly eroded when MTG educated him on the FACE Act, shifting him from “How can possibly you think this is good” to “Can we just charge Don Lemon with not cool man?” MAHER: “They arrested Don Lemon. Your right to gather news. Your right to physically enter someone else’s property. Only the first one is close to absolute. The First Amendment protects speech and the press. It does not give journalists a free pass to plan a disruption of a church service, storm a church, blatantly ignore instructions to leave, and stop parishioners who are praying just so you can interview them for content later. Don wasn’t just filming. He actively participated. A church is private property. “Open to the public” is conditional, not permanent consent. If you’re told to leave and you refuse, that’s trespass.
