We’ve seen this practice shared on other pages who try to replicate what we do, but the explanations have been wrong. First of all, this is a 6v5 positional practice, not 6v6 or 5v5. The players are deliberately positioned to replicate: ▪️ Two centre backs on the end line (They can step in) ▪️ Two inverted wide players ▪️ One central pivot ▪️ Two mini goals representing players between the lines AKA number 10 positions. The top zone is then played as a 1v1. The practice is designed to recreate central overloads when Liverpool have controlled possession in the opposition half, that's why it is setup in that part of the pitch, again deliberately so. The 1v1 represents a potential moment when an opposition centre back steps forward to track a player receiving between the lines, and spaces appear to run into. This creates an important decision for the team in possession. After completing a set number of passes, can they: ⚽ Play into a mini goal (10 positions between lines), for one point? Ajax training this week featured this Combination Passing Practice: Up Back Through Variation Practice Description This technical combination practice is designed to develop passing quality, positional awareness, timing of movement and communication. The outside players will always complete two passes around the outside before transferring the ball through the central area (Adapt as it progresses). As the ball enters the middle, the two central players combine using an up back through pattern. Both central players must continually assess the movement of the ball, adjust their positioning and prepare early to receive. Play is limited to one or two touches to encourage efficient ball circulation. Following the central combination, the player who sets the ball rotates into the outside position. The player who initially passes into the central area moves inside to continue the sequence. The six possession players looked to circulate the ball under pressure and, after completing six or more passes, could score into one of the mini target goals. The three pressing players had a simple objective. Win it and score quickly. But here was the twist 👇 At ANY moment, the coach could serve a new ball directly into the three pressing players. Immediately, the mentality of the six players had to change. From possession to aggressive counter press. No warning. No predictable trigger. Just instant reaction. The six players had to recognise the transition, sprint to reduce space, lock onto the nearest options, protect the target goals and prevent the three players from escaping or getting an early shot away.
