omg yes, we needed a timelapse!! Was thinking about this the entire livestream LOL

Amazing, but I'd like a cool scientific reason as to why the footage is so grainy. Is it just that hard to send high quality signals back to Earth at this distance? Is it radiation? Did they buy the cameras off Craigslist?

Bandwidth is a scarce resource up there and it’s a miracle we get constant live footage at all. I’m sure they’ll release 4k uncut footage once orion gets home safely.

Can you explain why that's the case? I work with bandwidth on Earth, but maybe I don't understand why this is so different in space. Is the signal loss that much?

@luke_leisher_ distance is the factor.. just like when you run ethernet.. the shorter the cable the better the bandwidth the longer the weaker the signal.. hence you would need a signal booster / repeater etc.

@luke_leisher_ another note is the constant movement.. just like when you're on a call with a cellphone moving will cause some distortions.. if you've ever driven along a mountain side you understand how you lose signal similar to how they go dark once they go on the other side of the moon.

@luke_leisher_ Good points. And I guess also because we can't point it in the same way we do here on Earth. We use light running through cables to get signal A to signal B on Earth. But I guess they're just throwing radio waves into the air and hoping it hits them

@luke_leisher_ for the distance they're at to be able to get messages / audio and video in about 1-2 seconds is still pretty good. id assume in the future there would say lasers or something to relay the transmissions between the moon and earth assuming a moon base does indeed happen.

Why is it moving around like a screen saver?

It takes place over about ~9 hours, even a small rotational drift will add up over time. This moves the moon around in the frame of view and has to be corrected every half an hour or so to maximize solar exposure to the panels. A few other things are happening like slight rotational translation of the panels and some rotation, also to maximize solar exposure and rotating to keep the moon in view of the windows, but it’s mostly just correcting small drifts.

I love how you can see the GoPro correcting exposure to properly lit the Orion, so the Moon is overexposed when the capsule is in the shadow, and when it turns to face the sun it lowers exposure and both things can be seen fine

Interesting. Shows how difficult it is to get an object to be perfectly still rotationally in a zero gravity vacuum.

This is all NASA can show with 21st century technology? 😂 Even my oldest Nokia phone that recorded video in 3GP format produced better quality! Someone must be an idiot with a diploma to believe what NASA is showing. The images should look at least like the picture below.

What a great waste of time, and money.

right? makes you wonder what's moving the space craft around. those maneuvering jets on the side of the craft clearly arent doing it. and there is no wind or water to help change the direction of the craft.

So this came from earth but in this footage u can see the moon coming into frame from a far then when closer an at the end of the Timelapse u can see the earth but behind the moon to the side how is that possible if we didn’t rotate around the moon yet an are just approaching it?

Thanks for sharing. It's funny how the rotation at 1 minute, changes the apparent albedo so much. I imagine the camera settings changed at that point? And/or is it related to the polarization of the reflected light?
