SpaceX is preparing to attempt its first-ever catch of the Starship upper stage on Flight 14. The catch will only happen if post-flight data review from previous missions comes back favorable. Catching Ship at the launch tower is a far bigger challenge than a splashdown, since the vehicle has to survive the full return profile and land precisely back at the pad. A Ship catch also requires an orbital-class trajectory rather than a suborbital hop. That means Flight 14 would double as Starship’s first true orbital launch, combining two major milestones into a single mission. SpaceX has already proven tower catches with the Super Heavy booster, and extending that capability to the upper stage would mark a major step toward full reusability. More Batteries vs. Submarines Now that the German TKMS and the French Naval Group have massively adopted lithium-ion batteries, following the Japanese lead, this is consolidating as a major trend, just as I had predicted. The next stage will be solid-state batteries, and at that point, we'll essentially be discussing only speed and submerged endurance in comparison to nuclear submarines. Since solid-state batteries are lighter, they will allow for a greater number to be installed, freeing up space for more powerful propulsion systems. Naval Group has already sold a version of the Scorpène to Indonesia capable of remaining submerged for up to 80 days. That's with lithium-ion batteries. Imagine what this could exceed, more than double, with solid-state batteries. In practical terms, a more powerful engine combined with solid-state batteries in the proportions that Naval Group is now using in the Scorpène would provide three times the speed, meaning something like 10–15 knots at constant speed while maintaining around 50 days submerged. This would give a range of 40,000–50,000 km, requiring less than one hour on the surface for a fast recharge. For speeds above 25 knots, simply adding more batteries and a better engine would suffice, as the solid-state system has high power output. All this at 15–20% of the cost of a nuclear submarine. And if the choice is to power the batteries with a micro-reactor, it would cost 25–35% of a conventional nuclear one. Then someone will say: “But a nuclear sub can stay submerged for years.” That makes no difference at all, since even with around 60 days of endurance, the crew still needs to surface to resupply provisions. The big advantages remain: battery-powered subs are superior in silence, and speed can be addressed with larger battery packs.

NASA ARTEMIS II MISSION UPDATE The crew and Orion are approximately 94,117km to the Moon, they're also just over 350,000km away from Earth. They're also travelling at a speed of approximately 2,523km/h, this will start to increase as the lunar sphere of influence takes a hold of the crew and Orion later today. Approximately 41.8% of the mission has been completed. Currently the crew is into the Orion Crew Survival System Suit Developmental Flight Objective (OCSS DFTO) operations, which is essentially a simulated emergency onboard the spacecraft and involves the OCSS suits being donned along with the crews strapping themselves into their seats and the cabin pressure being dropped to 10.2 PSI. This of course is one of many extremely important objectives that is being performed during the duration of this test flight around the Moon. OTC (Outbound Trajectory Correction) burn #3 is also still planned for later today, this is very much subject to change though if NASA decides to skip this burn also. 🧃 Introducing stereOS: a Linux based operating system hardened and purpose built for AI agents. It's clear that agents need an ACTUAL operating system (not what people are calling an "OS") to witness the full breadth and depth of their capabilities while mitigating the blast radius of autonomous, untrusted actors. But there are so many problems with AI sandboxes today: * Going out to the apple store and buying a mac mini will never scale and is way too expensive (obviously) * Running in Docker is too restrictive (agents can't stand up their own container infrastructure, no sub virtualization, docker-in-docker is very broken) * Firecracker strips all the hardware so GPU PCIe passthrough, secure boot, FIPs, etc. is out of the question. * Native VMs are too fat and the overhead of 1 agent per VM is too much. stereOS takes a different approach: it's a full NixOS system that you boot and then kick off agent sandboxes inside with gVisor + /nix/store namespace mounting. Each agent gets their own kernel and the /nix/store is read only by nature. Even if the agent was somehow able to escape the gVisor virtual kernel, they'd land on the NixOS system as the "agent" user! Not your actual hardware!! If you want to take a defense-in-depth approach, we support "native" agents that run at the system level kicked off by our `agentd` utility. These agents, on their own, can manage and kick off other sub agents using the internal sandboxing mechanisms.
