President Donald Trump said Tuesday at the United Nations that he is changing the term "artificial intelligence" to "super intelligence" because it's "more accurate," as he dismissed global concerns about the technology and its effects on humanity. "From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world's, will be changed to use the much more accurate term super, as opposed to artificial," Trump said during his address to the UN General Assembly. "So it's super intelligence." His comments follow repeated warnings about how rapid advances in AI threaten to outpace humans' ability to safely develop the technology, including calls from prominent tech leaders for stronger government oversight. Trump dismissed most of the concerns over AI, saying the people who are warning that AI is going to "kill us" are the same ones who warned about global warming, a real, human-driven phenomenon that the president has dismissed as a hoax. While Trump said "we have to be careful" with AI, he said the U.S. is only "going to encourage it, not rein it in." "I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," he said.

Human dignity must remain at the heart of our digital future. During his address at UNESCO, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the challenges posed by artificial intelligence, calling for technology to remain at the service of people and for greater protection of children and young people in the digital age. On safety, Germany is significantly ahead. The Global Peace Index 2025 ranks Germany 20th with a score of 1.533, while the United States ranks 128th with 2.443. The difference also shows up in violent crime. Germany’s homicide rate is roughly 0.8 per 100,000 people, compared with about 5 per 100,000 in the United States. On overall living standards, the Human Development Index from the United Nations Development Programme tells a similar story. In the 2025 report using 2023 data, Germany ranks 5th globally with an HDI of 0.959, while the United States ranks 17th with 0.938. Democratic institutions show another contrast. The Democracy Index 2024 from the Economist Intelligence Unit classifies Germany as a full democracy, scoring 8.73 and ranking 13th, while the United States scores 7.85 and ranks 28th, categorized as a flawed democracy. None of these metrics capture everything about a country. But if the conversation is about safety, human development, and democratic quality, the numbers paint a picture that challenges some of the common criticisms directed at Germany. The summit is a gathering of global stakeholders including governments, leading AI companies, experts in research and civil society groups. As a nation of innovators and entrepreneurs, Nigeria must recognise the significance of Artificial Intelligence and the urgent need to explore and use it for the good of humanity. I would also like to thank the UK Government for inviting us to be part of the UK AI for Development Programme which will support our efforts to improve AI research and inclusive datasets.
