Armagan has been blind since birth and has said that his goal was to get to know the world around him.  His father helped him learn about colors and shapes by describing the visual qualities of objects.

Armagan's work has been analyzed by researchers at Boston University and the University of Toronto.  In 1994, he was invited to an international exhibit of visually impaired artists in the Czech Republic

Armagan's paintings have been described as primitive , but they also demonstrate an understanding of perspective and other sight skills.  Brain scans of Armagan while he paints show that areas of his visual cortex light up as if he were seeing.
