Kendrick Lamar has never publicly credited Jay-Z’s “4:44” as a source of inspiration when creating “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.” But when “4:44” dropped he tweeted about it and he also participated in the footnotes episode of 4:44’s title track. So, I don’t believe that it’s far fetched for Kendrick to have drawn inspiration from Jay’s album. There are many similarities between the two albums. Both albums are conceptually built around Jay and Kendrick going to therapy and dealing with their personal issues publicly. And though they are sonically completely different, they address a lot of the same topics… Therapy, the male ego, accountability, family, relationships, infidelity, fatherhood, legacy, daddy issues, family members sexuality, religion/spirituality, breaking generational family curses, Black culture, America, social issues, wealth, financial responsibility, emotional maturity, influence, etc. Two nearly identical albums from two guys in completely different stages in their lives. They unmask in front of their audience and bare their souls on wax with true introspection. Raw and intentional artistic expression. Nothing is surface level.

Creating the CiCi album packaging was such a joy because every detail represents a different part of me. This is my 8th studio album, and while so much in my life has changed, some things remain the same: my love for my family, my love for my fans, my love for my art, and my love for music, even on the days when it doesn’t always love me back. The cover tells its own story. The black chest plate is my armor, the shield I carry into the world as the fierce woman you see before you. The white fur look that wraps around the packaging reflects the beautiful chaos of my life, balancing all the roles and responsibilities but weaving them into something artistic and powerful. From my music to my family to running businesses, CiCi is always on the go. And truthfully, sometimes I’m just figuring it out as I go along. This journey has been a roller coaster of trials, hustle, setbacks, resilience, and victories. Narajole , a quiet village in Paschim Medinipur, is a place where history still speaks. . Nearly six hundred years ago, Uday Narayan Ghosh, a descendant of the Ichhai Ghosh lineage, settled here. In 1596, during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, the Subedar of Bengal, Man Singh, conferred the honorable title “Khan” upon Balvant Ray, the eighth generation of this family. From then on, the zamindars of Narajol came to be known by the surname Khan. . Spread across 360 bighas of land, the Narajole Rajbari was not merely a structure of bricks, stone, and wood—it served as a secret stronghold of India’s freedom movement. . The royal complex once housed 250 rooms, a Hawa Mahal, Durga and Ram temples, a moat-surrounded fort, and Lankagarh, making it an architectural and historical marvel. . Even today, inside the palace stands a unique Nat Mandir made of iron sheets, adorned with colored glass—a rare artistic wonder. It is believed that this very design inspired the Tagore family while building the Kach Mandir at Santiniketan. . Imagine being a Ukrainian film director living in the Soviet Union. You were born in the 1930s. You grew up knowing exactly what the Holodomor was — not as a word in a history book, but as the shadow that hung over your family, your village, your entire childhood. You know the truth. You want to expose it. But you also know that under Soviet censorship, even whispering about collectivization, famine, or the crimes of the regime could destroy your career… or your life. And yet… some people still tried. In 1968, director Rollan Serhienko made the film “Білі хмари” (White Clouds) at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. On the surface, it’s a drama about a man returning to his dying father. But woven into its memories and imagery is something the Soviet censors hated: a quiet, unflinching confrontation with the horrors of collectivization, dekulakization, and the traumatic legacy of the Holodomor. Soviet censors immediately recognized the danger. Imagine being a Ukrainian film director living in the Soviet Union. You were born in the 1930s. You grew up knowing exactly what the Holodomor was — not as a word in a history book, but as the shadow that hung over your family, your village, your entire childhood. You know the truth. You want to expose it. But you also know that under Soviet censorship, even whispering about collectivization, famine, or the crimes of the regime could destroy your career… or your life. And yet… some people still tried. In 1968, director Rollan Serhienko made the film “Білі хмари” (White Clouds) at the Dovzhenko Film Studio. On the surface, it’s a drama about a man returning to his dying father. But woven into its memories and imagery is something the Soviet censors hated: a quiet, unflinching confrontation with the horrors of collectivization, dekulakization, and the traumatic legacy of the Holodomor. There will never be another. A truly singular example of modern artistic excellence and profound humanity. When I'd call him, he would dive right into telling stories and I was all ears. I wish those conversations had been recorded because they were drenched in unlimited insight, wisdom and soul. Whether it was his equal parts awe-inspiring and ridiculously humorous recounting of how he helped shaped cultural history, or our shared love of family, world travels, exploring faith and rising from dark times. Almost everything was discussed and I was always grateful for our relationship. To fully unlock and reflect upon it all right now is just too much to process. His anecdotes about work ethic and his constructive feedback of my work were significant factors in sharpening my craft—for instance as a collaborator and unofficial producer on the We Are and World Music Radio albums that changed my artistic trajectory. But some of the most powerful advice he shared with me was rooted in how to develop your humanity. The power of prayers and mantras, which he said every morning . His insight about how "Your music can never be more or less than you are as a human being, so work on the human part" or how he and Ray Charles developed inner strength during the civil rights era by instilling within that "Not one ounce of my self worth depends on anyone else's acceptance of me" , a few examples of MANY. When I won the Academy Award in my speech I evoked his words about the power of 12 Notes, how we all get the same ones and it's up to us what we do with them. When he wasn't able to travel anymore I would always make a point to visit him in LA to show love, talk life and play for him. The last time we saw each other in person I played for him but this time asked if I could record him listening to me for posterity sake . In the clip I'm playing his "Ai No Corrida" then going into a Chopin waltz, then some blues and then Thelonious Monk's "Round Midnight" . Always the best for Q.
