This is a country afraid to deal honestly with mental illness. We treat physical illness as something that deserves care, treatment, and support. Mental illness should be no different. Some people need constant care. Some people need long-term support. And yes, government has a role in helping provide it. The answer is not abandoning people to the streets and then pretending we don’t know why the crisis keeps getting worse.

Just two years after voters approved Prop. 1, California has exceeded our goal of 6,800 new behavioral health treatment beds. In 1957, California had 37,000 psychiatric beds with half today’s population. That number fell to 5,500 at its lowest, leaving communities without care. Governor Gavin Newsom Gavin Newsom is closing that gap and building a behavioral health system that meets the scale of the crisis and gets people off the streets and into treatment.

This new RESET Center marks a fundamental change: if you do drugs on our streets, you will be arrested. And instead of sending you back out in crisis, we will give you a chance to stabilize and enter recovery. This is about enforcing the law, getting people off the streets, and connecting them to treatment—while getting officers back on patrol and restoring safety and order for our neighborhoods.
