As a reminder, here is how Barack Obama talked about self immolation and Mohamed Bouazizi. He compared him to the founding fathers and Rosa Parks.

This is not to endorse self immolation (I absolutely do not) but to simply point out that the most mainstream American politicians have classified such an act as political. And not just as mental illness or memes or the fantasies of the ‘online left.’

Aaron Bushnell, RiP, made the ultimate sacrifice, with courage & honor. I don't endorse this 'extreme act of protest', as Aaron himself described it. But is it so different from when a soldier lays down his life in protection of a flag or an ideal? Obama appears to think not.

@kthalps Let's honor Aaron, by helping others in the military become conscientious objectors. There should be a concerted effort to educate them on their options.

He had received orders to deploy to the area. It was an open act of political defiance. One can argue a lot about whether such an act is likely committed by someone in a great mental space, but he had a pretty clear idea of how it was targeted at his superiors.
