As #ATT service resumes, it exposed two vulnerabilities. The first, explained here, is about FirstNet, a public safety dedicated network that is administered by the private companies. It too failed today, leaving vulnerable a system we thought we had protected after 9/11. 1/ CNN

The second is about how the system is managed and regulated. The lack of safety regulations over what is an essentially for-profit public entity is not sustainable. The oddity of this situation -- national in scope -- shows vulnerabilities that have not been addressed. 2/2

@CNN Your description of the firstnet agreement lacks some detail that’s important out. All @ATT bought was the right to use the bandwidth congress reserved for first responders on their wireless networks. 1/

@CNN Based on this understanding of it. It comes across as a grift and not the originally conceived concept of a secure public safety broadband network that congress was pushing after 9/11. 4/4

@CNN As a condition of paying over $1B for this the @FirstNetGov requires att to give firstnet enabled devices priority on that bandwidth. Att then sells the devices for profit but with some discounts to first responder agencies who still pay for the service plans and devices. 2/4

@CNN All while the @FirstNetGov governing board continues to rake in funds and push this a “secure network”. It’s no different than any other network except for the occasional prioritization moments which btw also failed today. 3/4
