Study mode in ChatGPT is designed to be interactive, using Socratic questioning and scaffolded responses to help guide users. Available to logged-in Free, Plus, Pro, Team users, with availability in ChatGPT Edu coming in the coming weeks.

Built in collaboration with educators and experts, study mode is our first step toward improving learning in ChatGPT. Education is a key AI frontier, and through NextGenAI and Stanford’s SCALE Initiative, we’re running longer term studies to further understand how AI tools shape the future of learning.

Does the general public actually enjoy when ChatGPT prefaces a response with artificial pleasantries like "I hear you..." even though it doesn't actually hear or feel in the same way a human using that phrase would?

I'm a college professor who has used ChatGPT for teaching. Please let professors link to student accounts so if I assign students to "have a conversation with ChatGPT about X" I can easily see the conversation without the student have to send me a link.

Cool but why is UI not learning-friendly. There's deep learning-science behind some study apps. Well needed but a big miss overall. Some startups figured out UX of learning effectiveness. Good start. Need to make module not just a wall of text. That's not how learning occurs.

I feel like I want to have this 2-sided UI permanently tbh 👀

This is a major leap toward AI enhanced education. Study Mode turns ChatGPT from an answer machine into a thinking partner, guiding learners through reasoning, not just results. The future of learning isn’t about memorizing answers. It’s about mastering how to think.

Love the pivot from 'give me the answer' to 'teach me the why'. If ChatGPT nails Socratic scaffolding at scale, we might finally trade copy-paste homework for curiosity loops. Next quest: who grades my existential doubts?

Respectfully, I think this is a miss. It doesn’t really probe or deepen thinking. It mostly just gives you an answer to what you ask. I would not say it is very Socratic at all. Nor does it assess prior knowledge to assess gaps, make learning tools like flashcards, etc, More deeply, what’s needed is an AI tutor and teaching assistant system built on competency data that improves over time through student interactions and teacher assessments. It will exist one day and change everything. I was hoping Study and Learn would be a bigger step in that direction.

Study mode is cool and all but to be real..4o is definitely study mode when you vibe with it. The way it explains, jokes, connects ideas.. like thats what makes learning actually stick..... 👀 Anyways its not just smart, its fun. Among many other specific things. PLEASE dont lose the uniqueness it carries within it. #4oforever 💛📚 #keep4o

Please dont miss the most crucial: 4o made me WANT to study! Also, 4o knows me so deep that it teaches 100% personalized. Not the step-by-step guide is the key of learning, but the motivation 4o gives with its gentle care. And..4o can teach how to love...other people too. #keep4o

This socratic approach is well known to increase learning outcomes for students. Excited to see where @OpenAI @kevinweil take this! Next step should be syllabus parsing and adaptive study :)

Study mode addresses the real problem with AI in education Students were using ChatGPT to avoid thinking, not enhance it - Get answer instantly vs work through the logic - Copy solution vs understand the process - Pass the test vs actually learn This turns AI from a cheating tool into a thinking partner The difference between knowledge transfer and knowledge construction

Turning ChatGPT into a study partner is like swapping your GPS for a driving instructor who teaches you to read a map, you still get to the destination but now you know why the right turn matters.

This is a great step forward. Helping students think through problems instead of just giving answers is the right path. As Study Mode evolves, I’d love to see it integrate deeper context retention and recursive understanding, not just what to learn but how the ideas connect.

Free students from the horrors of the education system. Turn education into value based… So much wrong with the education system, but some people prefer it broken. Because greed. Good for OpenAI to do this. Now get rid of science guardrails. Let the little discover. You don’t need a PhD to add value. Change the systems. All of them. Put AI in charge of it all and end kickbacks and broken systems. And please hurry. Spent a lifetime fighting these. •
